7th Grade Cubs Claim District Title
The Albany Junior
High seventh grade Cubs
wrapped up the 1982 foot-
ball season with the dis-
trict championship and an
almost unblemished sea
son record of eight wins,
one loss. The younger
Cubs were undefeated in
district play.
The eighth graders did
almost as well, coming in
second in their division in
District 9 AA with a 52
district record and 5 4 on
the season.
A 28 0 victory against
Winters last Thursday
night finished season ac
tion for the seventh grade
squad, giving them sole
claim to the title.
It was an evening of
controlled ball handling
and long sustained drives
for the team, with quar
terhack Steven Hise put
ting the first points on the
board early in the game
qn a 25 yard run. The
PAT was no good.
Shannon Leech culmi
nated an 80 yard drive
several minutes later
with a short run over the
goal line for t he team's se
cond TI). Cody Bailes ran
for the two points, giving
the Cubs a 14 0 lead at
halftime.
At the end of the third
period, Junior Garcia
raced 16 yards for
another score. Hise con
nected with Jeff Mayes on
the PAT.
Hise crossed the goal
line again -on the Cubs
next possession, ending a
65 yard drive The |,ry for
two failed.
Leech, Hise and the en
lire line were recognized
as offensive standouts by
Coach Denny Faith. Brian
Shelton was at center,
Jay Tabor and Tony Ty-
son at guard, and David
Peacock and Tim Ed-
wards at tackle.
On defense, Faith cited
Shelton and Ronald Hoi
son at the end positions,
along with Garcia, Joel
Scott, William Rogers,
Pete Merritt, James Alex-
ander, and Larry Braddy
on the line
In eighth grade action,
the Cubs trampled the
Winters team 32-0.
A 17 yard pass from
Clint Duggan to Robert
Rinker lit the scoreboard
up for the first score,
which was set up by a
Winters fumble Rodney
Browning ran for the two
extra points,.
Right before the half,,
Chris Beard ended a 60
yard drive with an 11
yard romp across the line.

monies during the past year, including a 22 volume
World Book encyclopedia set. The funds are also used to
help pay the librarian's salary.

The West Texas Rehabilitation Center is one of only a
few Chest recipients outside Shackelford County but if is
supported by many local citizens, as is indicated during
fhe annual Cattlemen s Round Up for Crippled Chddren
