raise
The faculty at Nancy Smith
Elementary is preparing a com-
munity birthday calendar as a
fundraiser r new playground
equipment at the local grade
school.
The school, along with the
PTO and private donors, have
been gathering money for the
new playground for the last three
to four years and hope to have it
installed and ready for use at
the beginning of the school year
in August.
Originally the school was at
tempting to raise approximately
$42,000 for the new equipment
and its installation. However,
only about $31,000 has been
raised so far.
"We are hoping that the com-
munity birthday calendar will
take us to the $34,000 level and
we can start the installation this
summer," said third grade
teacher Leigh Lowe, one of the
coordinators of t he project.
"We have cut back some on
what we originally hoped to have
and now we need about $34,000.
If there is anyone who would
Challenge team to compete May 2
like to make a donation or pur-
chase a listing on the commu-
nity birthday calendar, please
contact Mary Hose in the elemen-
tary office."
The new equipment will be
located at the south end of the
main wing at the school. The
school moved some of its 40-
year-old equipment when the
new school was built three years
ago, but there is a definite short-
age of equipment for the num-
ber of students using the facil-
ity
The school (listrid has kicked
in $10,000 towards the project,
along with $7,000 from the PTO,
$10,000 from an anonymous
donor and $4,000 that the teach-
ers have raised by selling step-
ping stones and the calendar
project.
"Actually we are still going to
be about $3,000 or $4,000 short-
age even after we trimmed the
project down and really need
some help from the community
to finish this project before the
next school year starts," sAid
Lowe.
Four Albany High School
scholars will pit their knowl-
edge in the areas of math, his-
tory, geography and science
against students from Jim Ned
High School when the two
schools meet in the champion-
ship round of the 2000 KTXS
Academic Challenge.
The finals will be held next
Tuesday, May 2 at the KTXS
studios in Abilene. The taping
will begin at 7:00 p.m and will be
aired on Thursday, May 4 at
6:30 p m . replacing "Hollywood
Squares" that evening.
Spectators are welcome and
even encouraged at the taping,
but need to be in place by 6:30
p.m. to 6:45 p.m. because seat-
ing is limited.
This year's Academic Chal-
lenge competition started last
fall with 32 area schools entered.
Albany students have defeated
four other tea ma in the quest for
the championship title, includ-
ing Abilene High School,
Haskell, Rising Star and
Sweetwater.
AHS senior Chris McCarthy
is captain for the AHS academic
Challenge team. Other team
members are Becky Loeschen,
Will Waller, Jeremy Maurer,
Matthew Wiloth, Drew Hudson
and Kevin Schkade.
Co-op meeting set
Big County Electric Coopera-
tive will hold its first annual
meeting of the membership this
Saturday at the Stamford High
School Auditorium
Member registration begins
at 11:30 a.m. Members and
guests are invited to a barbecue
meal catered by Johnny's BBQ
out of Midland after they regis-
ter.
An outdoor arching demon-
stration and a solar water pump-
ing demonstration will be avail-
able on the grounds. Stan Mahler
ofOlney will entertain the crowd
with his cowboy music at 12:00
p.m. in the auditorium.
The business meeting will
convene at approximately 1:00
p.m. in the auditorium.
r playground
Lowe added that the funds
include professional installation
in order to obtain a long manu-
facturers warranty and for safety
reasons,
"We have thought about try-
ing to get volunteers to install
the equipment, but this is not
the type of project to cut corners
on, plus if we don't allow a certi-
fied installer to do the work we
will not have much of a war-
ranty from the manufacturer."
For more information about
the calendar project or making a
donation, call the elementary
office at 762-3384.
