Lions to host Rotan in 3rd district bout
By Donnie A. Lucas
Despite getting off to a slow
start, the Albany Lions posted a
46^3 victory over the Hamlin
I Pipers last week and moved
i step closer to a district play-
k erth.
lbany will host the Rotan
Ibwhammers this week, with
toff set for 7:30 p.m. at Rob-
Jail Stadium.
le Yellowhammers are still
sing their first District 9-A
i but Coach Denney Faith
s$£d that Rotan's record is de-
cying.
^fThey have lost district games
tq$lunday and Haskell, but they
pljlyed Haskell a very close
gdijne, losing 37-28 "to the de-
fending district champs."
f-The Yellowhammers are 3-4
over all for the season, while the
Lions are now 4-3 overall and 2-
0"«i district.
••"Rotan has possibly the best
running back in Class A," said
Faith. "He is unbelievably fast
a&d no one has kept him from
getting his yardage. We are go-
ing to have to play sound de-
fense and keep him contained."
t The coach also said that Rotan
still has plenty to play for in the
race for a playoff spot.
'They aren't out of it. They
still have a chance," Faith said.
"The district is very balanced
and we are going to have to play
well each week. If a team comes
out flat, they can get in a lot of
trouble."
"Haskell, Albany and Munday
currently have 2-0records, while
Knox City, Rotan and Hamlin
are 0-2 in district.
Rotan does not have a junior
varsity team and only has one
combined junior high team. The
eighth grade Cubs will play in
Rotan at 5:00 p.m. Thursday.
The JV will play Christoval
in Albany Thursday, starting at
5:00 p.m.
The coaches were still search-
ing for a seventh grade game at
press time.
Lions Start Slow
"We came out a little flat
against Hamlin and let them get
ahead," said the coach. "We had
talked all week about Hamlin
coming out fired up, and they
did."
The coach said that even

though the Lions started slow,
they eventually got the momen-
tum going in their direction.
"Tom Hill (quarterback) had
an ankle injury early in the game
and was really hobbling, so we
put Blake (Brewster) in at quar-
terback for the first time and he
did a great job of running the
offense."
The coach said having two
talented quarterbacks will pay
dividends later in the season.
"It is a real luxury for us to
have two exceptional athletes to
use at quarterback."
Hill's injury was not consid-
ered serious and he is expected to
be back in the line up this week.
"Donovan Clevenger also had
another outstanding game at
receiver, and Trey Davis and
Alex Salinas both ran the ball
well for us."
The coach commended Brew-
ster for stepping in for Hill.
"Blake has his strengths and
we used the option game to take
advantage of that."
On defense, the coach com-
mended the efforts of Brock
Jones, Cody Hilliard, John Cope
and Slone Balliew.
"We only gave up 128 yards of
offense for three points and most
of that came on their first drive,"
said Faith. "We were able to put
a lot of pressure on their quar-
terback to shut them down of-
fensively."

JV blanks Menard 39-0
The Albany junior varsity
Lions picked up a 39-0 win over
Menard on Thursday, October
13 in Winters.
The JV Lions have had to
pick up games where they can
since District 9-A competition
opened. Most of the teams in the
district do not have JV squads.
The JV will host Christoval
this week in a 5:00 p.m. game at
Robert Nail Stadium. Albany
was originally scheduled to play
Rotan, but the Yellowhammers
do not have a JV squad.
The Lions rolled over Menard
last week, 30-0.
"We played a great game,
probably our best game of the
season," said Coach Edward
Morales. "Everyone played hard,
the line blocked well, the backs
fan hard and the quarterbacks

and goal from the five. The 22-
yard kick was made by J.J.
Burciaga with 1:52 remaining

The Lions scored three times

first half. Blake Brewster pulled
his foot out of one tackle and
twisted out of another to score
on a seven-yard carry into the
end zone. Robby Maldonado
kicked the PAT to put the Lions
ahead 7-3. The series was high-
lighted by a 27-yard run by Trey
Davis and a 34-yard keeper by
Brewster.
Donovan Clevenger returned
a Hamlin punt 31 yards to the
Pipers' 32-yard line to set up the
second Albany tally. Brewster
hit Davis with a 32-yard screen
pass play down the left side with
1:18 remaining. Maldonado
kicked the PAT.
Hamlin fumbled the ball back
to the Lions on the first play
after the kickoff, giving Albany
the ball at the Pipers' 25 yard
line. Brewster hit Clevenger in
the back of the end zone with a
nine-yard pass to post the third
score. Maldonado kicked the
PAT to give the Lions a 21-3 lead
at the half.
The Lions scored twice in the
third quarter, both on long
passes to Clevenger. Faced with
fourth and 24, Brewster hit
Clevenger with a 36-yard pass
for the first touchdown. The PAT
attempt by Maldonado failed.
Albany got the ball back three
plays after the kickoff thanks to
a pass interception by Slone
Balliew. Brewster found Cleven-
ger again on a 29-yard pass for
the second tally. Maldonado
kicked the PAT to put the Lions
ahead 34-3.
Alex Salinas scored twice in
