Lions claim regional title in 26-10 win
The Albany Lions came out
on top of a cat fight in Sweetwa-
> ter last Friday, catapulting the
team to the Class 2A
quarterfinals for the first time
in nine years.
Albany clawed their way to a
26-10 victory over the New Deal
Lions last Friday to win the Class
2A Division II regional champi-
onship, advancing to play Stan-
ton in Sweetwater. The game is
set for 7:30 p.m.
The Lions are familiar with
the Mustang Bowl in Sweetwa-
ter, having played in it not only
last week, but twice in 1998. In
fact, the last meeting between
Albany and Stanton was at
Sweetwater in 1998 in a regional
playoff game that ended with a
35-7 win for the BufTaloes.
Pre-sale tickets for the game
are available through Friday
noon in the principal's office at
both the elementary and high
campuses for the usual $5 for
adults and $3 for students. Tick-
ets at the gate will sell for $6 and
$4. Albany-fans will be on the
visitors side of the stadium this
week.
Stanton is coming into the
bout with a 40-14 win over the
Hamlin Pied Pipers last week
during the regional round. Both
Hamlin and Olney suffered de-
feats last week, leaving the sec-
ond place Lions as the last team
out of District 8-2A still in the
playoffs.
The Buffaloes and Lions both
have identical 11-2 season
records and Were both the run-
ner-up team out of district.
"There is no question that
Stanton ha's a very good team,"
said Coach Denney Faith. "They
will be a lot like the Stanton
teams we have played in the
past."
The coach stressed that a hav-
ing a big crowd of Albany fans
will help the local team Friday
night in Sweetwater.
"We hope that we will have
another enthusiastic crowd like
we did last week, and then some."
Faith reported that Stanton
has two outstanding running
backs and a very good offensive
line to protect them.
"Their offensive line domi-
nated the game against Hamlin
and they played the same ag-
gressive type of defense that we
have seen before,"
The Lions are going to be
working hard to this week to
make the most of every scoring

have to play really well and capi-
talize on the things we can do
well," explained Faith. "We will
have to control the ball on of-
fense and our defense will have
to stop their running game."
Albany Makes
New Deal Fold
The local Lions got off to a
strong start against New Deal
last Friday, but passed up a
couple of chances to score that
let the visiting Lions back into
the hunt.
"I felt like we played really
well against New Deal," said
Coach Faith. "But w.e did have
some opportunities to score that
we missed. We will have to be
more efficient this week."
The coach commended the
offense for moving the ball well
throughout the bout. Albany's
JoeTidwell rushed for 205 yards
on 26 carries and scored one of
the Lions' touchdowns. A check
on state records for a single play-
off game resulted in somewhat
of a surprise. While Tidwell was
60 yards shy of the record of 255
yards set in 1954, the honor is
held by a former Albany player.
Albert Burton still holds the
Class 2A record for rushing set
during a game against Paducah.
The coach also praised the
offensive line for another out-
standing performance.
"Our defense also did a great
job of stopping their running
game. We gave up a few big
plays on passes, but that will
happen when you get to this
level of play."
While the coach said that" it
will take another great effort on
the part of the Lions this week
against Stanton, he stressed
what a great accomplishment
the Lions have made to extend
their season to the fourth round
of the playoffs.
"Our kids have done a great
job preparing themselves to put
us into the quarterfinals and
they should all be proud of what
they have accomplished."
How They Scored
Albany wasted no time get-
ting on the scoreboard, capping
a 78-yard drive early in the first
quarter to draw first blood.
Joe Tidwell busted through
the middle of the line to race 43
yards for the tally. The two-point
attempt by Tidwell failed.
Just four downs later the Li-
ons had the ball back and set up
on the New Deal 19 thanks to a
60-yard punt return by Javiel
Garcia. However, despite a first
and goal from the eight, Albany
was unable to punch the ball
over.
The local Lions got the ball
back a few plays later and started
their second scoring series. The
60-yard drive ended with a four-
yard run by Marcos Alcaraz on
the second play of the second
frame. Alcaraz also ran in the
two-pointer.
The Lions lost another chance
at scoring when their next drive
stalled at the New Deal eight
yard line on an incomplete pass.
New Deal took over and
marched the ball 92 yards to the
goal. The scoring play Was a 40-
yard pass from Cade Pierce to
Joey Barajas. Lenny Williams,
kicked the PAT to make the score
14-7 at the half.
New Deal settled for a field
goal early in the third period.
Williams booted the 45-yard
tally to draw within four points.
Albany answered on the next
series as Alcaraz scored from
the one yard line to cap a 62-
yard drive. The two-point at-
tempt failed.
New Deal attempted another
field goal at the top of the fourth
quarter, which came up short.
The Lions punted the ball at
midfield after running out of
downs later in the period, only
to have Tidwell pick off a New
Deal pass on the first play of
their series. Two plays later Al-
caraz ran the ball across the
goal from the seven. The two-
pojnt pass attempt failed to leave
the score at 26-10.
Advance tickets available at school
Special activities are continu-
ing this week as the Albany Li-
ons climb higher on the football
playoff ladder.
In preparation for the Lions'
quarter-final contest against the
Stanton Buffaloes, local support-
ers have planned a Thursday
night pep rally, to be held at the
Bank Park, beginning at 7:00
p.m.
The all-night drum beating
will start as usual at 8:00 p.m.
that same evening, kicked off by
the AHS cheerleaders.
Anyone interested in beating
the drum is asked to contact
Albany Athletic Booster Club
officer Debbie Hawkins to sign
up for a time slot.
The regular Friday afternoon
pep rally will take place at 3:00
p.m. in the AHS gym, with the
team scheduled to leave at 3:30
p.m.
Cheerleader sponsor Jill
Bennett reported that silver
flags for $2 and playoff ribbons
for $1 will be sold at both pep
rallies.
Local fans are asked to stay
for the send-off immediately af-
ter the Friday afternoon pep
rally. In addition, downtown
merchants are encouraged to fly
their Albany Lions flags, wave
and cheer as the team is es-
corted out of town.
Advance tickets are being sold
for the quarter-final game at a
cost of $5 for adults and $3 for
students until noon on Friday.
Prices at the gate will be $6 and
$4. District passes will be ac-
cepted.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 at the
Mustang Bowl in Sweetwater.
