Ten Tips Or How To Take Care
Oi Your Car
Ate yon afraid of tfie man
Sfho rum the neighborhood gas-
oline station ?-Aiham«d to ask
him about that funny noise in
your automobile engine for fear
lie'Il know how ignorant you
are about your car?
took him right in the eye and
•sic him anyway-that's the advice
ef James B. I.ightburn, a profes-
sional expert on car engines and
em service stations who says it's
*lo sin for the layman (or lay-
woman) to know less about the
workings of today's complex and
Jiigh-powered car engines than
Grandpa did about the plumb-
ing in his "Tin J.inty."
"The pioneer driver was, by
fleeessiry, a 'do-it-yourself me-
chanic. In his day garages and
eerxice stations were few and far
between and Detroit recogniied
the fact by including a kit of
lools with every new car," said
'Mr. Lightburn, an executive of
Parolator Products, Inc., pioneer
fflanufacratef of anwmotiVe fit-
ters currently celebrating its 40th
anniversary,
"Todav's car engines are more
dependable and expert service is
available everywhere - thus the
modern driver has less came to
need a craftsman's knowledge of
his engine; and, besides, modern
living keeps him too busy think-
ing about other things," the ex-
ecutive laid.
But a minimum of knowledge
li essential if the motorist wants
to keep his operating costs low
and his trade-in value high, so
Mr. lightburn offers these ten
tips on car care as a "must" 'or
sensible car ownership:
1. Don't "race" • cold engfne.
It was meant to operate at
high temperatures and forc-
ing it to work too hard
when it's cold can cause le-
rious damage.
2. Never let the gas tank get
"almost empty." Water (con-
densation) forms in a near-
ly-empty tank and then
mixes with the gasoline.
j. Add a lot of mileage to the
iifa of your car-and put
more mileage between the
repair bills—by having your
service station install a gas-
oline filter. It will keep im«
purities out of delicate cat-
puretor mechanisms.
4. While the traffic light is
red, give your engine a
break by putting the auto-
matic transmission in neu-
tral—this saves strain on the
transmission, too.
5. Add up to three more mites
per gallon of gasoline hy
changing the sir filter (it's
inside that drum-like con-
tainer atop the engine) every
10,000 miiel of normal driv-
C If your engine vihrafer white
sou're Handing still, the car.
curetor is probably out of
whack and you are wasting
gas. Ask the sen ice station
man to make the necessary
•djustment.
7. On a cold night don't turn
en your lights and radio un-
til the engine scarts. The ex-
tra strain can break your
battery's back.
•.Change the oil and lubri-
cate your car regularly, as
required by your make of
car and the way you drive
it. Consult the service sta-
tion man on this one.
9. Change your oil filter at
least every 4,000 miles. It
collects abrasive grit and
the metal particles, carlton,
condensation, and acids that
are the "by-products" of en-
gine operation. If not
changed regularly, they
could dump their load of
harmful impurities back in-|
to the oil stream and make
a job for the repairman.
10. If that little noise in the
engine is a "ping!" try ■
tankful of premium gaso-
line. This should cure it and
increase your power, to
boot.
