Vendors sign up for Rediscover Albany

"Rediscover Albany" is now
just over three weeks away, and
vendors and local merchants are
already preparing for a day of
fun, food, crafts and bargains.
As of Tuesday, several ven-
dors had already signed up a'nd
chairman Bobbie Cox was opti-
mistic about the response to
publicity so far.
The emphasis of the spring
sidewalk fair is providing old-
fashioned family fun, and ac-
tivities range from a watermelon
seed spitting contest to a com-
munity fish fry that evening.
Organizers also hope to at-
tract quality crafters who will
in turn attract a large number
of out-of-town shoppers. Holly
Bernard, who chairs the mer-
chants activity committee of the
Albany Chamber of Commerce,
Brewster entries place
at state stock shows
Albany High School senior
and FFA member Ben Brewster
recently exhibited several pigs
in the Houston and San Angelo
livestock shows.
In Houston, Brewster placed
sixth in a class of 25 Spotted
Poland China pigs and 11th out
of 57 with a Duroc entry. A large
number of swine entries are
"sifted" in Brenham before they
even get to the Houston show.
Classes.at San Angelo were
even larger, and Brewster
showed a Duroc pig to eighth
place in a class of 71, and a
Hampshire to ninth place out of
82 entries.
Choir contest set
Albany junior high choir stu-
dents are busy preparing for
competition next Monday,
March 29 at Cisco Junior Col*
lege in Cisco that will include
concert pieces by the entire
group, as well as solos and en-
itmibles.
The junior high vocalists are
rehearsing three numbers for
the annual competition at Cisco
under the direction of Jennifer
Allison.
Those who are entering solos
n the contest are Natalie
Johnson, Tiffany Clark, Angel
i' ikes, Mindy Brooker and
Bruanne Jones.

AHS tennis team
hosts Hanilin
Tlie Albany High School ten-
uis team came back from spring
break to take on several ath-
letes from Hamlin in a dual meet
on Monday afternoon, winning
half of the matches they played
against the Jones County team.
The girls doubles team ofJes-
lca l.ucas and Brutuli Warren
defeated 1). Powell and K.
Bilbrey 6 1. Lucas and Warren
also played against Albany
teammates Ragan Riley and
Kmdal Wilson, winning 6-0
Knuua Cates and Amanda
Devon; came out winners
against Hamlin's Powell and
Bilbrey with a 6 4 score.
Li girls singles, Sandra
Castaneda defeated K. Lane 6-
:t, but I.ane was victorious over
Misty Cleveiiger 6-3. Brandi
VV.tr re a took a 6-2 match over
teammate Clevenger.
The only Albany player who
was able to compete Monday in
the boys division, Jody Metcalf,
iost 6 1 to Cory Thompson and
7-5 to('tins Beli. /
The loc al junior high tennis
players will travel to Eula on
Monday, March 29 for afternoon

The high school players aren't
scheduled to play again until
Thursday; April 1 when they go
to Rose. Park in Abilene to be
seeded for district

crafts available for sale. "We
sent invitations to some of the
best crafters in the state and
several have already signed up
for booths," she stated.
Among the items for sale so
far will be different types of
crafts, furniture, personal care
products and decorative items.
Several members of the Re-
discover Albany corpmittee are
in the process of organizing fam-
ily activities throughout the day,
such as a petting zoo, water-

melon seed spitting competition,
board branding and spur mak-
ing. "We're trying to make this
fun for everyone who takes time
out of their weekend to come to
Albany for the day. We also in-
vite local residents to spend all
or part, of the day in the down-
town area."
Along with the arts and crafts,
local organizations are being in-
vited to set up food booths, and
Several havfe already responded.
The food vendors will be congre-
gated in the Bank Park.
At the end of the day, local
and area residents are being
invited to eat their evening meal
at a community fish fry in the
Bank Park. The event will be
organized by members of the
First Ba itist Church, with pro-
ceeds r od to help fund the
church inual mission trip to
the R i ande area. A portion
of the funds will also be given to
the Albany Ministerial Alliance
and to the merchants commit-
tee.
Booth Registration
Anyone interested in reserv-
ing a booth should contact Cox
at 762-2014 or the Chamber of
Commerce office at 762-2525.
The cost to reserve a space is
$20. Booth locations will be as-
signed on a first come, first
served basis.
The committee would like to
vendors registered by next week,
but will accept all comers until
the day of the event, according
to Bernard.
Geraniums Available
Albany merchants and
homeowners are being encour-
aged to purchase geraniums to
place in their yards and in front
of their businesses in an effort
to "color the town" for the spring
season.
The Chamber of Commence
is offering geraniums for sale
which will be delivered on April
8. The six-inch pots will come'in
various colors for $4 apiece.
Orders are being taken now
for the flowers, which can be
picked up at the Visitors Center
starting at 10:00 a.m. on April
8.
Local residents may place-
