It is not the railroads, the colleges or other
institutions cr our city that has built it it]) and
sustained it; but the trade, the everyday con
sumption of what our merchants have to sell home at Throckmorton
and the employment of brain and muscle of oth !l>
er classes, and it is woman, not men, that holds. '* ,;i1, {U" ! ,j
this trade in the hollow of her hand.
Man may think he is the biggest pebble or (l' l|a: : ; '•
the beach, the lord of creation because he votes slnn 1 1
and makes a big fuss about election time, bul v
this doesn't add one dollar to the trade of tin
town.
Every man is controlled by some woman, and
most of his purchases are influenced by her
taste. Woman control the family and i - t,h ■
natural purchaser for the whole outfit, includim
her husband and children. The women of Do !lu'
Leon control the trade of DeLeon and it is in 8
their power to make or mar the business of the vvat< '•
city.
This fact is reognized by our merchants, and
hundreds of dollars are spent each year in ad-
vertising goods that are to be bought and used
by women. Through their hands go. - the mon
ey earned by husband or father, and thi monev
is the lifeblood circulating medium of the bu
iness community.
The rapid, ^vigorous circulation of this moriev
is as necessary to the well being of our mercli
ants as plenty of good blood is to the body. Tie
more money that is spent i.t home th
money for churches, schools, etc.
So, ladies, the prosperity of the town i in
your hands. Business makes the town, and you
make the business. There cannot be busin,
without customers, and il \ • u go e!><- vliere I
trade, that much custom is lost •
There is no necessity for going el-ewh- m
Our merchants carry almost ev< rything thai . t«i
be found in the great cities, and it' you can't
find what you want here it is probabh
own fault. (Jive them the opporiunitv and the1,
will be glad to serve you. You buy only on'.
bonnet, or dress, or cloak at a time, and
does it matter if you buy it in a huge e : \
smaller one?
\\ hen you spend your money in other place
all you get is the goods you buy. When you
spend it at home you not only get the good-.
but the money comes back to you in bettej
streets, better roads, better schools or perhaps
better patronage of your husband, brother or
son.
If you will read the advertisements of yom
local merchants you will find that about everv ,ast vvV,'
thing needed is kept in DeLeon. These advt'r-
tisements are generally true. Not because the
advertisers are any better than other people, but
they can't afford to misrepresent,—DeLeon Free back in Ok la hoi

O. L. York is Sheriff.
Last Tuesday a verdict was rendered in the
District court whereby O. L. Yor1-; " ill nrain be
re-instated as sheriff of this county. i t will be
remembered that York was sheriff'for four years
and was a candidate for the third term in the
last November election, but was defeated b\
Lassater, the Populist nominee. Lassater waV
killed by his horse falling with him a day or so
after the election, und was never notified of his
election. The court waited the twentv days for
Lassater to qualify and then declared the'office
of sheriff vacant and appointed Mr. Aladdox
sheriff. York held that he was sheriff until his
successor was duly elected and qualified, and as
Lassater never qualified—owing to his untimelv
death—iih should still hold the office.—Mineral

Kvery editor has received them. The post-

ter is not to blame. For instance there was a
man by the name of—well, say. 1 im Short, who

Barnum, "see that pile of brick-bats yonder' At a reception,
you go carry them up those stair steps 'to yon McKinley la I m

and continue that all day and 1 will pay you s->.
Don't answer any questions that may be asked
you." The man went to work, and in a hort
time there was a large crowd following this man
curious to find out what he was doing with those
brick-bats. By that means of advertising. Bar
num sold more admittance tickets into his'muse-
um that day, than he had before in several
weeks.—Graham Leader.
