A couple of devoted Lion fans cheer their favorite team
following an Albany touchdown Friday against Anson.
Lady Lions drop first district game
The Albany Lady Lions
drftppwl a game to Abitene Chris-
tian High School last week, but
the JV won two separate bouts
as both teams prepared to open
district competition
Albany traveled to Bangs on
Tuesday to play the first of two
District 5-2A games against the
Lady Dragons for the district
title, bringing home a loss. Com-
plete results were not available
at press time.
Albany will travel to DeLeon
on Saturday for" a 10:00 a.m.
non-district match, and return
home to host Bangs in the regu-
lar season finale on Tuesday,
October 26 starting at 4:30 p.m.
The varsity dropped their
game at Abilene Christian last
week 15-7, 15-9.
"This was a good game for us
goi ng into district," stated Coach
Perry Simmons. "We are pretty
evenly matched with ACHS and
have to play well to stay with
them."
■ The coach, added that the Lady
Lions missed too many serves to
Abilene Christian. '"They missed
only two serves and we missed
12. We can't miss more than two
or three'serves.and expect to
win a game at this point in the
season." ' '
Meagan Marshall led the scor-
ing with six, followed by Robin
Picquet with three, and Lynd-
sey Jones, Erynn Estepand Kin-
dal Wilson with two points
apiece. Becky Loeschen had one
point.
The JV team won both games
they played at ACHS, including
a 15-13, 17-15 victory over the
host team.
"This was really fun and ex-
citing for our girl? I am very
proud of the JV girls and their
hard work has really paid off."
Marissa Wisdom was the top
scorer with 11 points, followed
by Lauren Hill and Tiffany Clark
with six points each. Megan King
had. five points, while Kassie
Roberts and Jessica Sparks
scored two points each.
The JV also defeated Veribest
in aclose match while at ACHS.
The local girls won 15-13,16-14.
Wisdom again topped the list
of scorers with nine points, fol-
lowed by Picquet with seven and
Erica Reames with five. Brand!
Warren and Jenna Wilson scored
three points each, and Clark had
two points.
Anson slips by Albany JV 7-6
Lady Cubs split games with Moran
The Albany Lady Cubs played
a couple of ~B" team games in
Moran Monday night, splitting
bouts with the Lady Pups.
The 8B team defeated Moran
15-10,16-14, while the 7B squad
dropped its match 9-15, 3.-15.
"The girls all played v. ell and
it is really nice to play a team
like Moran where the kids know
each other and everyone shows
good sportsmanship," said
Paul Johnston. "'We really had
good effort by our girls."
The Lady Cubs will close the
1999 volleyball season on Mon-
day, October 25 in Graham.
Games are set to begin at 5;Q0
p.m. with the 7B team. Both A
teams and B teams will com-
pete. ,
The Albany junior varsity Li-
ons were edged out 7-6 last week
by the Anson Tigers in their first
district loss of the season.
Albany will play at home on
Thursday in a 6:30 p.m., hosting
the Hawley Bearcats
L^st week's defeat dropped
the Lions to 5-2 for the season
and 1-1 in district play.
The Tigers opened the scor-
ing in the second quarter with a
four-yard run that was Set up a
play earlier by a long pass play.
Anson booted the PAT to tack on
what would become'the winning
point
The Lions answered in the
second with a scoring drive of
their own. Tanner Rollins broke
free for a 45-yard run to the goal
for the score. The Lions went for
the two-point conversion and the
lead, but were kept out -of the
end zone.
"It was one of those games
where we drove the ball, down
the field; only to get set . back
' with penalties or turnovers,"
sai'.d Coach Rod Britting. "We
•made too many little errors that
ended up costing us the game."
The coach commended the
offense for moving the ball well.
"The line did a, good of blocking
and Aucencio Arreola ran well
for us." .
He also praised the defense
for "stuffing" Anson on 40 plays
or so, "We had a good night on
defepse, but we allowed a couple
of big plays that hurt us."
