The Albany FFA chapter has
receotly received two grants
from Region 14 called "Texas
Learn and Serve America.''
According to vo-ag instructor
Chris Beard, each grant is worth
$2,500 for a total of $5,000.
The goals for the Texas Learn
and Serve Grant include the fol-
lowing:
• Finding a method by which
young people learn and develop
through active participation in
thoughtfully organized experi-
ences that meet actual commu-
nity needs;
• Coordination between
school and community;
• Integration into each young
person's academic curriculum;
• Providing time for a young
person to think, talk and write
what he or she did and saw
during the service learning pro-
cess.
The program also provides
young people with the opportu-
nities to use newly acquired aca-
demic skills and knowledge in
real Ufe situations in their own
communities.
"It will take much of the popu-
lation of Shackelford County to
make these grants work," ex-
plained Beard "The Albany FFA
hqs to match the $5,000 with in-
kind donations given by the
people of the community.
"So far, people have been
great about giving to this
project," he continued. "We
would like to say thank you to
the people who have helped us
and who plan to help on future
projects."
Goals for the grants, some of
which have already been com-
pleted, include:
• Bell tower at elementary
school;
• Building pens and gates for
the FFA feeding barn;
• New signs constructed, on
US Highway 180 East and West
that say "Albany F F A Welcomes
You,"
•. • Building a flag pole at the
softball field;
• Tilling and constructing a
garden area for the Community
Resource Center;
• Building a wash rack at the
FFA feeding barn.
"All of these projects will take
a lot of planning and work from
the students and the commu-
nity partners'," said Beard, "but
we're looking forward to fulfill-
ing all the grant requirements "
