CRC plans back-to-school fair
The Back-To-School CHIP
Day planned by the Shackelford
County Community Resource
Center is set for next Thursday,
August 10 at the Center.
The "mini health fair" will
feature CHIP enrollment and
re-enrollment, immunizations,
Texas Health Steps exams and
other information relevant to
families with young children.
The special event is slated to
start at 1:00 p.m. and end at
4:00 p.m., according to informa-
tion from the center.
An immunization clinic will
be held in conjunction with the
health fair, beginning at 1:00
p.m. Texas Department of
Health staff will be present to
provide immunization records
and other information along with
the immunizations themselves.
CRC staff members and other
volunteers will be recording stu-
dents' height and weight, and
checking blood pressure and
teeth. Those records will be pro-
vided to the school nurse.
Also this year for the first
time, the center will offer Texas
Health Steps exams for children
on Medicaid.
In addition, workers hope to
have an adequate amount of
school supplies on hand and
ready to distribute by next
Thursday's health fair. More
than 100 local children were
helped last year by providing
them with new school supplies
prior to the first day of school.
CHIP Program
Staff members at the Center
are continuing to enroll and re-
enroll local families that are eli-
gible for the Children's Health
Insurance Program (CHIP), and
sign-up is one of the major em-
phases at the August 10 event.
Designed for families whose
insurance costs are more than
the family budget can afford,
CHIP covers children from birth
through 18 years of age. Rates
are based on the number of
people in the family, total in-
come and expenses, with a maxi-
mum fee of $50 per six-month
period.
The insurance, which must
be renewed every six months,
covers preexisting conditions,
regular checkups, immuniza-
tions, eye examinations, glasses,
prescriptions, specialist care,
dental care, mental health care,
x-rays, lab tests, hospital care
and other services.

members will be set up on Au-

and help fill out applications.
Noelia Cisneros is the area
CHIP representative and is
available at the Center from 8:00
a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each weekday.
"Noelia is trained to help appli-

CRC staff member Claudia

Other types of information
will also be distributed at the
mini health fair, and sign-up

ter-school program, ASPIRE.
School Supplies
Families who need to request
assistance or place children in
the school supplies program can
call the Resource Center at 762-
2447 as soon as possible.
When the "Adopt a Buddy"
program began several years
ago, donors were encouraged to
"adopt" a child or family, con-
tributing enough funding to fur-
nish that child or children with
supplies. According to CRC ex-
ecutive director Susan Jones,
some of the contributors told her
after the first year that they
couldn't afford to sponsor an
entire family, that the items cost
more than they were expecting.
'That in itself should tell us
all something important," said
Jones. "The expense of provid-
ing required supplies at the start
of a new school year can be over-
whelming for a family at a low
income level. If the rest of us
think it's expensive, think of how
they feel when they start trying
to buy for three or four chil-
dren."
Anyone wishing to assist with
the program can contact the Re-
source Center for more informa-
tion at 762-2447.

2006 PROPERTY TAX RATES
IN SHACKELFORD COUNTY
HOSPITAL DISTRICT
This notice concerns 2006 property tax rates for Shackelford County Hospital District;.
It presents information about three tax rates. Last year's tax rate is the actual rate the
taxing unit used to determine property taxes last year. This year's effective tax rate
would impose the same total taxes as last year if you compare properties taxed in both
years. This year's rollback tax rate is the highest tax rate the taxing unit can set before
taxpayers can start tax rollback procedures. In each case these rates are found by
dividing the total amount of taxes by the tax base (the total value of taxable property)
with adjustments as required by state law. The rates are given per $100 of property
value.
