ARTS AND SCIENCES
The College of Arts and Sciences offers
courses and programs designed to
provide a broad liberal arts education to
students in all majors throughout the University.
The core curriculum, which is
required for all bachelors degrees, is provided
primarily through this college as
are a wide variety of courses which serve
to augment and expand the student's general
educational experience.
The college also offers specialized training
in a variety of pre-professional programs
and in specific major and minor fields appropriate
to the following bachelors degrees:
Bachelor of Arts
Bachelor of Behavioral Science
Bachelor of Science
For specific requirements leading to these
degrees, please refer to the Academic
Organization and Degrees section of this
Bulletin.
* DEPARTMENT OF ART
Objectives
The art curriculum is designed to provide
direction and stimulation to student
artists as they pursue their individualized
programs of study. Ample time is set aside
in all studio courses for constructive individual
and group criticism and discussion.
A studio art emphasis intends to
give the student sound training for creative
work, to build technical proficiency in
art media, and also requires liberal arts
breadth in academic and intellectual skills.
Bachelor of Arts Degree
Students majoring in General Studio Art
(non Graphic Design) under this degree
plan must complete 36 semester hours of
art. The following courses are required: Art
1301, 1302, 1311, 2302, six hours art history,
and 18 hours guided upper division studio
elective. (Note: If a student wishes to go
on to graduate school in studio art, then
the art department recommends that the
student take an additional 18 hours of art.)
For other requirements refer to the General
Outline for the Bachelor of Arts degree.Students majoring in Graphic Design
under this degree plan must complete 45
semester hours of art. The following courses
are required: Art 1301, 1302, 1311, 2302,
six hours art history, 2385, 3314 or 3324,
3321, 3323, 3352, 4323, 4355, 4360, and
3 hours studio elective. For other requirements
refer to the General Outline for the
Bachelor of Arts degree.
A minor in Visual Communication is
recommended for Graphic Design majors.
Art majors with Visual Communication
minors may take up to 15 hours of their
minor from courses required of their major
as long as these courses are also recommended
by the Communication department.
This would allow art majors to take
up to 15 more hours of guided art electives
to fulfill their major requirements.
Notes:
The Department of Art is a member of
the Texas Association of Schools of Art
and has student chapters of the Texas Art
Education Association and Kappi Pi, National
Honorary Art Fraternity.
All candidates for the Bachelor of Arts
degree and Bachelor of Behavioral Science
degree with an art major are encouraged
to have an exhibition of their
work during their senior year.
The Department of Art reserves the right
to retain any work for exhibition purposes
and for the department's permanent collection.Bachelor of Arts Degree and

Degree, Studio Minor
To minor in Art under the Bachelor of
Arts or Bachelor of Behavioral Science
degree, 24 or more hours of art are required,
including the following courses:
Art 1301, 1302, 3 hours art history survey
and 15 hours studio electives (six hours
must be upper division).
Teacher Certification Program
Students who are seeking teacher certification
in art should refer to the Irvin School
of Education section of this Bulletin for a
listing of the teaching major or minor and
all other Texas certification requirements.
