specialization. May be repeated for credit as

Admission Requirements
Criminal Justice majors and minors who
plan to seek employment with a government
agency are advised to research
employment requirements. Department employment policies vary from agency to
agency and often include eyesight, weight,
and other health restrictions. Most Criminal
Justice agencies also conduct thorough
background investigations of an
applicant. Those with criminal records and
poor driving records may be disqualified
by employers.* DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH
Objectives
The department offers courses in literature
and the English language. Courses
in composition and language provide training
in the techniques and skills which are
requisite for accurate, effective written expression.
Courses in the literature of
America, England, and other countries
familiarize students with specific writers,
movements, periods, and literary problems;
prepare them to recognize, to analyze,
and to evaluate the various types of
literature; build reading and other language
skills; train them to do independent
thinking and research; and develop
understanding of aesthetic and cultural
dimensions of human experience.
All students are encouraged to begin a
continuing program of reading when they
enter Hardin-Simmons University. To facilitate
this goal of personal achievement,
the Department offers guidance by providing
counseling and a reading list designed
personally for any interested
student.
Freshman English
All degree candidates in the University,
regardless of the degree sought, are required
to offer 6 semester hours of English
composition in sequence (English 1301,
1302, or the equivalent). Research papers
are required.
Sophomore English
In most of the curricula of the University,
students are required to offer 3 semester
hours in literature. The student may
satisfy this requirement by taking literature
courses numbered in the 2300 sequence,
or their equivalent. Six semester
hours of freshman and 3 hours of sophomore
English (or the equivalent) are prerequisite
to all English courses numbered
3000 or above. A student taking a teaching certificate, regardless of the field, must
offer credit in 6 hours at the sophomore
level. Research papers are required.
Members of the department are available
to assist the student with English language
difficulties during any phase of his
study at the University. Students are encouraged
to take advantage of the Writing
Laboratory for help with problems in
English composition.
Degrees
Bachelor of Arts
Bachelor of Behavioral Science
A major or first teaching field will consist
of 30 semester hours in English with a
basic course distribution as follows: 6
hours on the freshman level and 3 on the
sophomore level (with 3 additional hours
on the sophomore level if a teaching certificate
is desired). Advanced courses
should include a minimum of 6 advanced
hours each of American and English literature.
A student planning to teach English
at any level or to enter a career in
which writing skill is desirable should take
advanced coursework in writing or in teaching
composition.
A minor requires 21 semester hours in
English with a basic course distribution
as follows: 6 hours on the freshman and 3
on the sophomore levels (unless a teaching
certificate is desired, in which case 3
additional hours are required on the sophomore
level); the remainder should be
divided among courses in English and
American literature and in the English language,
i.e., language history, grammar
and linguistics, advanced composition,
teaching composition, or creative writing.
The student should note that the Bachelor
of Arts degree requires 12-14 hours
of one foreign language. The department
considers these courses extremely beneficial
to students who plan to teach Eng
