Soil Conservation
District News
Calvert Hoel, Group Leader of
the South Womack Conservation
Group, is quite enthusiastic about
seeding he did with native grasses
November 3, 1944. After only
two growing seasons, Mr. Hoel has
a complete cover of little blue-
stem, Indian, sideoats grama and
hairy grama grasses on his land
and considers it well protected
from erosion as well as being ready
to produce a good crop of hay or
pasture next year. There are no
better grasses for the average up-
lands of Bosque County, Mr. Hoel
believes.
He attributes his success to the
following operations:
1. Preparing a clean seedbed
with a "one-way" in July or Aug-
ust.
2. Using from 250 to 1,000
pounds of native grass stalks or
hay with the seed on per acre.
3. Planting in November and
pulverizing lightly with the disc
set straight.
4. Mowing to control weeds
adequately (Mr. Hoel mowed three
times the first year and one time
the next year).
Mr. Hoel warns against grazing
the first year, especially in the
early spring. During the next
few" days a waterway will be seed-
ed to native grasses on the Hoel
farm as part of a complete soil and
water conservation plan he made
in 1943 with the assistance of Soil
Conservation Service Technicians.
As soon as grasses make a good
cover, terraces will be built emp-
tying into this waterway.
Native tall grass seeds are ready
to harvest in Bosque County now.
Many are growing on idle areas in
fields, along roadways, on mead-
ows and other places. You can
harvest these seeds with a binder,
mower, or scythe and plant them
on idle fields or in waterways.

the Soil Conservation Service.
