Something in That Superstition,
An amusing incident occurred at a
summer watering place several seasons
ago. A young lady of means and
position, accompanied by her familv,
occupied one of a row of cottages at-
tached to a large hotel. It so happen-
ed that all her life long this g-rl had
chorished a superstitious drend that
soonef or lator wheti sho turned Iho
light out at night and was on the point
of getting into bed an unknown some-
thing would spring from beneath the
couch and catch her by tho foot, liver
since her earliest childhood she bad
waited for this frightful catastropho to
take place, but up to the time of her
summer sojourn to tho above-mention-
ed cottage sho had waited in vain.
Ono night sbe wont lo lier room as
usual and prepared for rest. Tho
apartment was situated on tho ground
floor, opening upon a narrow lane
leading to the botel proper. Tho
young lady disrobed, blew ont tho
lamp, and nervously impressed as us-
ual that somelbing would seize her by
the heel, made a quick rush for the
bed. Just as sho got hor right foot se-
curely lifted, however, to her unspeak-
able horror, something did catch hold
of the left one. 'ine awful presence
held her instep in a gr p of iron,
and uttering a yell of terror sho tum-
bled in a heap ou the bed in a dead
faint. Her mother nnd sister, who bad
adjoining rooms, rushod in with lights,
startled beyond measure to find "Miss
Edith in a state of collapse, with a
long-legged, jet-black pig poking his
nose from beneath the bedstead. The
animal had walked in during the dav,
the front door boing always open, and
had secroted himself under the bod un-
til Miss Edith's running high jump
bad roused him lo sudden activity.-^
