MAINTAINING EGG
PRODUCTION DURING
SUMMER
By P W Kazmolcr Urynti Tex
Wo lmvo put oft writing on this
subject until wo could soo nn upward
trend of okb prices This
week price of fresh laid Infertile
oKSTg w jumped up to 30e per
dozen net to tho producer A few
more weeks and fresh lnid oebs
will again bring about four conts
ouch In view of these facts we
have tho courage to write more
on this subject
Make Them Lay All The Time
The successful farmer and poultry
raiser feeds and cares for his
flock so at to recoive n good production
evory month in the year
Dont worry about the hen wearing
herself out laying eggs Give
her good caro and feeding and
she will come thru this hot weath
er even when laying heavily In
better condition than tho other
flock Hint Is on a vacation and
poorly fed j
Keep dry mash before yourj
flock all summer long This is
very important It is bettor to cut
down on scratch grain feeding
to induce heavier consumption of
dry mash in hot weather j
Increase Mash Consumption
In order to be certain that tho
hens will consume enough dry
mash reduce number of grain
feedings to one nday and that preferably
in the afternoon and this
should only bo a very sparing
food during this hot weather
We recommend giving one feeding
a day about middle of after
noon of a moist or crumbly mash
using regular dry mash mixture 1
moistened with sour milk or buttermilk
to a crumbly consistency
Give all they will cat up clean in
30 minutes If milk is not available
use water j
Watch Green l ood Supply
Hot dry weather will dry up
the available green food supply
Plans must be mnde to provide
additional succulent and fresh
green food While the weather Is
still hot you may plant sudan and
if necessary irigate it Later In
the fall be sure and start a good
sized oat pasture for your flock
of laying hens Remember fresh
tender juicy green food is importantMineral Supply
Some of the flock already are
in the moult and the lest soon
will be It takes mineral water
to form feathers Since oyator
shell is cheap place a good sized
box full of thorn before your
flock and keep a liberal supply
always available
Fresh Water
It ought not to le necessary to
mention importance of fresh
ter yet only recently 1 made a
trip throughout Texas and found
fresh water sadly neglected for
most flocks I believe I am confining
myself to facts when I tell
you more than 75 per cent of the
flocks were suffering form a lack
of fresh water In hot weather a
hen can do bettor without feed
than without water Stop to think
but n moment nnd you can readily
realize the importance of fresh
drinking water for your flock
Laziness alone Is responsible for
our poultry flocks having to do
without water
Vontilato Houses
In our country hen houses nl
this time of year should have liberal
sized openings in all four
sides of tho house Go out at night
and see whether the fowls are
comfortable If tlioy are panting
and spreading their wings it is
too hot open up the houso moio
on nil sides Dont be afraid of
a direct daft over the birds at
this time of the year Prosit allIs
Important oven tho it still is
tree Not only should they be
comfortable while on the roosts
at night but also during the daytime
If natural shade is not available
close to the house then artificial
shade bust be provided Most
anything no matter how crude and
low to the ground will do A low
arbor built out of scraps of lumber
brush hay straw or anything
pIro will answer tho purpose If
possible soak tho ground beneath
these shelters once or twice aday
with water this will help provide
a cool place
Dont forget tho red mites
spray or paint nil fixtures especially
roosts nn dnests with somo
good disinfectant as crude oil or
kerosene

High Average Speed
We have found that they can

equipment
In a recent test one of these
new cars was driven 110 miles in

I hour the car traveled twentysov
j en miles Tho car covered fiOl
miles the first hour of the trip
This test was made over aver
ago road conditions Part of tho
route lay through level country
and part through hill country
whore the roads wore steep and
winding Tho day on which tho
test was made was somewhat
warmer than the average summer
day In this part of tho country
but the motor was not ovorheatod
