Poultry Feeding
United Stntjes Experimental
Farm Bettsvlllo Md reports that
protein is necessary in an egg
laying mash In comparing protein
In meat scraps and in dried but
tormllk they found that the lowest
protein ration containing 77
per ccut with both the meat aud
milk rations produced only 15
oggs per hen which wero laid
only in the spring months Both
jtzo and shape of these oggs worp
affected by tlio rations boing
slightly under normal bIzo with a
tendency toward a long narrow
shapo Egg production showed a
rogular rapid inceaso In theso
tests with Increasing porcentago
of protein up to about 1G per cent
This feeding test should clearly
show the Importance of pro
toln especially meat scrrtps and
dried buttermilk protein What
happens when you feed only
grains or a cheap mixture of
bran shorts and corn meal The
answer Is given above your hens
are not getting enough protein
A ration should carry not less
than 20 per cent protein and at
least part of it must be of animal
origination such as found in meat
scraps or dried buttermilk The
many home mixtures will be
found lacking In the above important
respect
Give Epsom Salts
Epsom salts is the best known
purgative for chicks Poisons and
impurities of all kinds aro expelled
thru the droppings In hot
weather especially we have
found it wise to give epsom salts
to our gtowing stock by adding 1
lb of epsom salts to 100 lbs of
mash mixing thoroughly and giving
it once every two weeks
Enough mash containing the epsom
salts to last two days maybe
given at one time Epsom
salts may also be given in drinking
water at the rate of a level
tablespoon to each quart of drinking
water This water should be
4 kept before growing chicks a
ry
month old or older for two hours
and then removed Whon this
water Is given no other drinking
water or milk should bo given
Of course when tho epsom saltwater
Is removed plenty of fresh
clean wnter or milk or both
should bo kept before tho flock
Importance of Poultry Industry
According to tho U S Dopt
of Agriculture there wore pro
duced in 192C oggs of an estimated
value of 020000 and poultry
a value of 561000000 giving
a total value for tho poultry and
err op In that year of 1181000
000 This is only considering the
poultry production on farms and
not tho production in cities and
villages Tho value of poultry
products amounted to about 16 percent
of tho total value of livestock
being surpassed In this respect by
only two other branches of livestock
raising namely dairying
and swine production
Feed Cost of Producing Eggs
Recently two large egg laying
contests in Texas havo glvon out
tho report that at this season of
tho year whoro all feed is purchased
at retail prices It costs
about 12c to produce a dozen of
oggs It required about 1 12 lbs
of feed to produce a dozen eggs
On tho farm the feed cost probably
is lower yet it is easy to
see that when eggs sell for 10c
per dozen they are not boing produced
at a great profit oven on
the farms However there Is no
reason for selling eggs for less
than 20c per dozen We have been
getting more than this We have
not sold any fresh laid properly
graded infertile eggs for less
than 20c per dozen this year If
you are not getting a good price
for your eggs take a little time
off and find out why When you
sell a dozen eggs it you aro to
got a good price 12 of tho dozen
must be first class eggs not less
every ouo should bo clean good
size infertile and fresh laid If
any are too small if one or more
are no good ir any are dirty or
cracked or defective in any othor
way then you cannot expect tho
price I am talking about

In July 1925 I bought Mr J C Cowans hog business Prior to that time I had bought hogs from Mr
Cowan in car lots and at the time I bought the business 1 promised Mr Cowan that I would do my best to
make you as good a hog market in the future as he had in the past
I realized that it would be hard to take Mr Cowan s place for he tried hard to satisfy everybody but this
was my intention and is yet to make and maintain the best market possible
It seems my business has not been handled just right in the past and I am very sorry that some things
have happened unknown to me but I believe I have a man now that will treat you right Mr J A Hutchinson
is in charge
Bring us your hogs and receive the full strength of the market
We want and must have a living profit to stay in business
Yours for honest weights fair dealing and courteous treatment
