LIBRARY NOTES
Winnie Mac Atkinson
The Tulia Library wishes to
announce the arrival of several
new books which have been
placed upon tho shelves Each
week a review of one late book
will be given form the Library
through the Herald This week we
are delighted to give the review
of THIS PROUD HEART by PearlS
< Buck w wriWBm
After eight books about people
in China Pearl Buck In THIS
PROUD HEART turns to the
American scene and American
characters Yet this novel is not
to be thought of as a study of
American life For the authors
lnterest as > everbeenin locale
people in the depths of charac
ter and the heights of individual
experience When THE GOOD
EARTH was first hailed as a
unique interpretation of the life
of China she said My chief
pleasure and interest has always
beert people and since I live
among Chinsee then Chinese peo
pie I dislike all those writings
about the Chinese which make
them strange and outlandish and
my greatest ambition is to make
the people in my books as real
as they are to me if I can
In this spirit she now begins
to write about Americans In THIS
PROUD HEART she tells tho story
of a woman with the creative
impulse who is able to do everything
and do it all more quickly
and better than her fellows Susan
Gaylord is never satisfied
with one thing only She must
have love children home and
work besides Her hands and
brain must be busy not only with
cooking sewing tending her house
and children but also with shaping
the figures of people In clay
bronze and marble and she becomes
a great sculptor The story
is of the conflict into which her
gift brings her with everyone
whom she knows and loves There
is her own inner conflict too
j
but this Is less baffling because
the creative person is essentially
naive and simple
And so in Susan in spile of
her unique genius we find once
again as In Olnn in Carle and
in other women whom Pearl
Buck has already drawn the universal
qualities of womanhood
