HOW say Mo rry
Christmas this year
There are so many lovely
things which can be done
to dress up the entrance of
a house for the holidays
Some are gay and amusing
others dignified The
choice depends on your
own mood rather than the
style of the house because
when alls said and
done the majority of
doors look pretty nice with
any type of
tied with a big
red bow Slip the sticks
through the ribbon knot
2 Two gayly painted tinhorns
from the toy department
Fasten them X fashion
against an arrangement
of pine boughs
3 Tie a bunch of small
gayly wrapped packages to
the door knocker with narrow
ribbons of varying
lengths Tuck in a sprig
of holly for good measure
4 Find a jolly old Santa
false face cut the edges so
it will rest flat against the
door like a mask and surround
it with a wreath of
holly
5 Spell out MERRY
CHRISTMAS with red
Scotch tape on the two
long panels of the doorFrame
them with ropes of
greenery Words must be
placed vertically of course
6 Fill a flat wicker
basket with pine boughs
sticking in a few red berries
for a dash of color Tie
a red bow on the handle
and hang it from the
knocker
7 Make n shower bouquet
of little silver bells
tied to narrow red and
green ribbons
every one
a di f f e re n t
length Hang
thorn from a
big silver star
and theyll tinkle
merrily
whenever the
door is opened
8 For an
amusing war
time touch tie
a big red mesh shopping bag
to the knocker Stuff it with
gayly wrapped packages of
all sizes and shapes
9 Make a big stocking
of red oilcloth and white
candy striped percale Fill
with paper or cotton so
that it looks nice and bulging
but do have a few real
toys sticking out of the top
10 Small round wreaths
with or without silver bells
attached are always appropriate
An animated
heartshaped wreath has a
welcoming appeal The
edges can be of silver and
the heart red or orange
color

The farmers wife said Hiram I

along how wonderful it would be if wo

Maria he replied possibly wo
could if we were like this team with
only one tongue between us

Kaiser Speed
Speaking of the speed with which
Henry Kaiser has been building ships
for the government it is said that a society
lady was recently asked to officiate
at the christening of a new vessel
She was lod out upon a high platform
and Mr Kaiser placed a bottle of champagne
in her hand Get ready ho
instructed
The lady glanced over the platform
railing and saw only the keel of a vessel
being placed far down below
But Mr Kaiser she objected
There is no vessel here for me to
christen
Itll be up in a minute he said excitedly
Start swinging
CATTLE LOSSES FROM
SHIPPING FEVEU
During the last few years
both buyers and shippers of
cattlo have suffered serious
losses from shipping fever
or hemorrhagic septicemia
especially among weancrs unci
short yearlings says the Cutter
Standard
It has been general practice
to use bactorins for the control
of shipping fever but
not enough attention has been
given to allowing a sufficient
time between vaccination and
actual shipment for the animal
to build up an immunity
to the disease Formation of
antibodies or prot octivo
bodies within tho animals
system takes several days
and during the timo necessary
to develop immunity tho
resistance of susceptible animals
may even be below normalThat is why vaccination
Just prior to shipping is
fraught with dangers Added
to tho strain of handling
loading and shipping it may
do more harm than good Best
protection is afforded by
vaccinating ten days or moro
before shipping thus giving
amplo time for animals to attain
a fairly high degreo of
Immunity If this is impossible
then it Is bettor not to
vaccinate at all beforo shipment
but to wait until at least
two days after the animals
have reached their destination
Under these circumstances
recommended procedure
is 1 drive or handle
animals just off tho car as
little as possible 2 place in
an uncrowdod holding pasture
8 limit feed and provide
plenty of water < l after
animals have rested a couple
of days vaccinate
For tired eyes dissovlo a
teaspoon of salt in a glass of
water and bathe freely

SINGING OF CAROLS
God rest you merry gentleman
I > 1 nothing you di m y
Remembor Christ our Savior
Was born on Christmas Day
One of our most interesting
Christmas customs tho
singing of carols Is almost as
old as is the celebration of
tho day itself In tho early
Church tho bishops sang
carols on Christmas Day In
commemoration of the angels
songs at the birth of Christ
The first celebration of
Christmas Is said to have
been A D 98 but It was not
until A I 840 that Popo
Julius after extensive investigations
established December
25 as the Into most probably
correct and his lead in this
has been followed by Christian
nations down to the present

When there arc tanks to be stopped watch
the Engineers Tank block rush h is tho
order and the photograph at the right ittt
actual training lest shows thc sult Stopping tanks is only a part
of the job of the fighting U S Engineers They build the bridges
blaze the trails through mine fields yes all the services depend on
the Engineers And like men in all the other services youre apt
to find that when an Engineer lights up a cigarette its a Camel
PLAiNTS AS GIFTS
Thcro Is no better Christmas
gift for tho person who
likes plants and enjoys growing
them than a growing
plant
Tho giving of plants for
Christmas is no novelty but
this year such gifts will be
moro significant than ever
Never has homo meant moro
nor at any timo a more concentrated
effort been made
to preserve its essential beauties
Plants fit themselves
perfectly into this situation
IOMI1K INSTRUMENTS
Tho average medium bomber
has about 150 instruments
to guide the pilot radio operator
navigator and bombardier
A destroyer may have
nearly a thousand Even a
tank whore simplicity Is
paramount requires nearly
two dozen Including thoso instruments
that are part of tho
radio equipment Wartime
