It 98 pet4 cent of the high
school will buy defense stamps
we will receive n flag to fly below
our national flag We have
already gained recognition by
buying enough stamps and bonds
to purchase three jeeps but recognition
is not all we want We
want t do something that our
brothers husbands fathers and
friends over there really need
to finish the job thats already
started It is a good idea to have
a definite goal to work towards
however and If the high school
responds in reaching this one as
much as it did the Inst we will
have more than enough to get
the flag

Some of the seniors want to
know when the juniors are going
to start raising money for
the juniorsenior prom I think
it was made clear in the joint
class meeting that the seniors do
want one The rumor had been
started that we didnt want one
With the shortage of sugar and
other foodstuffs it will be almost
impossible to have any food
sales so it might be a good idea
to start thinking how it will be
financed If you are going to
Jiave a play it should be started
ioo because it isnt long until
ichool is out and the seniors are
just now starting work on theirs

What advice should be gircn n senior boy upon his graduation
from high school next May Should he let nature take
its course and wait to be drafted Should he bent a path to the
nearest recruiting station and join the first thing he conies to
Or should he exercise n little reason and common sense by taking
the advice of the War Department
First the senior should consider his nge If he will be 18
when school is out he might as well drop by the post office on
his way home from commencement because in all probability
ho will have sonic mail from the Selective Service Hut it is to
those 16 and 17 year olds who need most to keep a level head
and to follow the adrice of Uncle Sam who isnt such art old
fool tifter all Its true that you are 17 years old and are capable
of making your own decisions without any assistance from anyone
else you ticither want nor appreciate advice from those
older and more experienced than you but hold on just a minute
It is neither patriotic nor wise to do that which will not
only ruin your future chances for success lull will alo deprive
lTnele Sam of what he needs mostSKILL It i In lho e
would he patriots those 16 and 17 year old boys who think
it is their duty to grab a gun and enlist later whom the War
Department is directing this advice
If you are in this lower age group Uncle Sam suggests that
you join a reserve and CO ON TO SCHOOL
In most instances you can get a full year of college and if
you have what it takes you may be left in school to finish or
may he taken out of school to be trained by the government In
any event if you have the intelligence to do eredihli college
work and refuse to heed this advice from your government you
are actually hindering the war effort

Twelve cases of empty Dr
Pepper bottles have been lost
from the school pop machine
since school started Most of this
number have been stolen ii was
discovered recently by II M
Baggarly sponsor of The Hornet
who operates the machine Tootle
Goodman local bottler and business
men who have been asked
to purchase the bottles by the
culprits
Tkc bottles it was discovered
were stolen by some students
who had broken into the school
building at night The guilty persons
arc known and persons investigating
the case declared that
If tkc stealing docs not stop
they will be reported to the
sheriff
Merchants are requested to
be cautious when they are asked
to buy pop bottles and should
report the individuals to The

Journalism Class
Learns to Spell
H M Baggarly wondered why
people turned gray until he started
conducting spelling contests
in the journalism class Then he
found out Another discovery
was that this class had never
learned to spell
Take the word psychology
for instance Most of the attempts
at spelling this word were so
far off that one might wonder
what was being spelled Some of
the results were cycollegye
sycology cyctyologhy and
cycholloly
Versatile met with little better
success and turned out to be
versitle versitail varsatel
and versitale Alcdge al
legey and aldege were poor
imitations of the word allege
Brcthern and brethcren were
substituted for brethren
Apparently any resemblance
between the word given out and
the word spelled was entirely
coincidental

tenberry from the second grade
moved away last week Leon
went to Missouri and Elmo moved
