No parent would ever dream of putting their child at risk. Yet
each year many parents suffer the anguish of unintentiona
njury to their children. In honor of Baby Safety Month, here
are some tips to help you avoid some of the more common
hazards and keep your children safe.
Do riot store poisons or toxic materials under the sink. Place
them high up out of children's reach.
Install latches on all drawers and cabinets which might contain
items that could harm children.
When cooking, turn all pot handles inward so children cannot
reach them. Use back burners whenever possible.
Baby-proof stove knobs that are within children's reach.
Do not put magnets on refrigerators. They could accidently get
knocked off onto the floor where children could pick them up
and swallow them.
• Do not take pills or medication in front of children. They mimic
what they see. Never refer to medicine as candy.
• Do not rely on medicine cabinet locks for protection. The best
thing to do is to buy a tackle box or a tool box and put all
medications inside and lock the box
• Remove all soaps, razors and shampoos from around the edge
of the bathtub.
• Cover the bathtub spout with a spout cover to prevent children
from burning themselves or slamming their heads against it
and causing injury.
Install all busy boxes, mirrors or any type of crib attachment on
the wall side of the crib...otherwise, a child could use the
attachment to climb up and out of the crib.
Do not place wall hangings above a crib. If a child were to pull
one down, nails could come loose and fall into the crib.
Remove mobiles when the child is 5 to 7 months old. A child
could pull the mobile down or become tangled in the mobile
strings and suffer injury.
• Cover electrical outlets to prevent access to them.
• Install plexiglass on stair and balcony railings where children
might squeeze through.
• Place all plants out of children's reach.
• Place all hanging cords from answering machines, phones,
lamps and appliances out of children's reach.
• Wicker and children don't mix. A child could pick off the wicker
and put it into their mouth.
• Shorten or place all cords to blinds out of children's reach. A
child could pull the cord or accidentally wrap it around their
neck, fingers or wrists.
These safety tips are brought to you by The Greensheet.
