Members of the Wichita
& Affiliated Tribes and the
Tales 'N' Trails Museum
will host a day of celebration
Saturday in observance of
the 150th anniversary of the
Battle at Spanish Fort -
which is of itself a mis-
nomer.
In 1758 a group of Native
Americans, primarily from
the Avaya clan of the
Wichita and Comanche,
raided the Spanish mission at
San Saba, killing two friars
and several of the Lipan
Apache to whom they were
ministering.
A year later the Spanish
mounted a retaliatory raid
aimed at subduing the "hos-
tile natives" - a plan that
failed when the Spanish
muskets and two cannon
were met with lances,
arrows, and stone imple-
ments of war.
While the losses for both
sides were estimated at being
the same, proof of who 'won
and lost' could be gleaned by
the fact the Wichita used the
two Spanish cannons as tro-
phies for 10 years.
The Spanish reported see-
ing French flags flying at the
Wichita "fortifications" on
the north side of the Red

Cemetries—
o preserve heritage
SAINT JO — Got an old
cemetery you would like to
see preserved? Century
Club invites any person who
has an interest in an area
cemetery with burial sites 50
years old and older, to come
find out what to do and how
to get started on Thursday ,
Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. in the Saint
Jo Chamber of Commerce
Building on U.S. Hwy. 82
facing the Square.
Guest speakers Jim
Gafken and Tobie
Thompson will conduct this
mini-forum. Mr. Gafken has
had considerable success
identifying Civil War
Veterans at Dye Mound. He
is preparing to share his
expertise and some good
contemporary sources with
us.
Mr. Thompson works
with Montague County
Historic Commission's
Cemetery Preservation
Board and will focus on
what must be done to obtain
Texas Historical
Certification for any ceme-
tery. This is the first step to
make a cemetery a legally
protected site and is also a
prerequisite to any marker
program.
At this time only a hand-
ful of Montague County's
113 known cemeteries enjoy
the legal protection of being
certified and on the deed of
record where they lie.
Interested volunteers are
needed to complete the
preservation circle. Join us
if you can for this 30 to 40
minute program.

Despite 7
inches rain
totals lag
Even with 40% of the
year's total rain fall occur-
ring in October, the Lake
Nocona area is running
almost 50% behind the annu-
al total.
The National Weather
Service station at Nocona
Hills recorded 7.12-inches of
rain during the month bring-
ing the year-to-date total up
to 17.58 inches - or 57.7%
of the year-to-date average
for the past 17 years.
Historically, October is
the wettest month of the year
averaging 4.28-inches -
slightly more than the 4.25-
inch average for June.
And prospects for a sig-
nificant recovery before the
end of the year are not good.
Historically, November
has been the fourth driest
month of the year (2.17 inch-
es) with December the sec-
boxes.
