Calendars, AD, trash
Congratulations . . .
By Tracy R. Mesler
Regarding last week's
editorial the lack of calendar
information on the Nocona
ISD website the following
was posted on the district's
website by the end of the
week:
"The 2009 - 2010
District Calendar denoting
the day to day framework of
the school year is located in
the left navigation pane
under Student/ Parent
Resources. According to
this framework, August 24,
2009, is the first day of
classes at NISD.
"Events will be placed on
the School Events Calendar
located in the upper right
corner of the NISD home
page as they are submitted
and approved.
"As always, NISD is
committed to informing and
serving the needs of our
community. If additional
information is needed, con-
tact the NISD office at 940-
825-3267 or the Web
Master of this site at 940-
825-4251. We are always
glad to answer your ques-
tions. Thank you."
It should be pointed out
the district's webmaster can
only post the information
he/she is given by the staff -
and after clicking through
the monthly calendar
through June 2010, the only
"approved" thing he/she has
been provided as of Monday
at 3:56 p.m. was "the first
day of school."
Interestingly enough,
elsewhere on the district's
website is the "Official
School Calendar" which
was approved by the school
board last month. It lists the
first and last days of each
six weeks and semester,
school holidays, teacher in-
service days, state assess-
ment days and bad weather
days.
But apparently that infor-
mation has not made it to
the calendar "located in the
left navigation pane under
Student/Parent Resources."
As for the athletic sched-
ules, band schedules, two-a-
day s, etc., they have yet to
make it through the
approval process.

Speaking of athletics all
sorts of rumors are floating
about the tenure of Head
Football Coach/Athletic
Director Gary McElroy.
Supt. Vickie Gearheart's
hands, or in this case, her
tongue is tied by state per-
sonnel privacy laws to com-
ment on the matter, so other
than acknowledging there
are rumors, she really can-
not talk about 'what ifs'.
But one fact is Alvord's
head coach Mike Chaney
was hired Monday night as
an assistant coach at Iraan in
west Texas. The Alvord
School Board was to meet
Tuesday night, and accord-
ing to the Wise County
Messenger, was expected to
release Chaney from his
contract. That creates a
nearby opening.
Another fact is the
McElroys bought a home in
Decatur near the end of the
school year and have moved
there. Gary told Ms.
Gearheart and board mem-
bers they both plan on com-
muting to Nocona daily dur-
ing the coming school year.
Meanwhile the Texas
football blogs were replete
with comments that
McElroy had twice inter-
viewed for the Alvord job
and was either a finalist for
the Alvord job or a 'shoe-in'
to be offered the job. But
nothing is certain.
The Nocona School
Board meets Monday night
at which time it can take up
whatever personnel issues
are germane.
++
Over the coming days
and weeks we will see who
blinks first, the citizens who
resent being told to clean up
their messes which are on
public display - trash,
weeds, rubbish, clunker cars
and dilapidated buildings -
the city staff which is
charged with enforcing
those rules - or the Nocona
City Council which is get-
ting their ears bent by the
first group.
Meanwhile, hopefully, at
least some of the messes
around town will get
cleaned up.

matted eyes circling blindly

happen ... Texan's care
more about our animals than
what I have seen today. We
need better laws to protect
the dogs in mass production
puppy mills"
Field teams found hun-
dreds of animals in remote
locations on the 1200 acre
property, many of them suf-
fering from advanced debili-
tating health conditions. In

THE BARN
She's given way
To rust and rot
In a way it seems
That time forgot.
Her pens are full
Of trash and weeds
The fence succumbed
To neglected needs
There's hay wire hanging
On every post
Put right where
It was needed most
The tack room's trashed
The stalls fell down
The tins all rusty
ted and eyes so encrusted he
had become virtually blind,
was rescued from a field of
weeds so tall rescuers had to
crawl on hands and knees,
narrowly avoiding a nest of
venomous copperhead
snakes, to coax him towards
safety.
Another elderly
Chihuahua, suffering from a
broken lower jaw, broke the
hearts of rescue workers as
they watched him eat bits of
kibble by carefully manipu-
lating the angle of his head
to soften the kibble with sali-
va before swallowing.
And on the ground
That old bench
Over there in the shade
There's no way to tell
Of the deals he made
There's horseshoes hanging
Here and there
I can only sight
And softly swear
She's full of memories
There is no doubt
I can almost here
Son, let's turn um' out!
