ips or teens on being responsible adults
Like high school seniors across the nation, those at
Nocona High School are on the cusp of walking into the
wide world. How they handle themselves, how they han-
dle their affairs and how they respond to the situations
that life brings them will impact them but now and in the
future.
Monday, the seniors received one more tool designed
to assist them in handling those situations as representa-
tives of the Rotary Clubs of Nocona and Bowie and the
Montague County Republican Women handed out copies
of "Now You Are 18" and then briefly went over the high
points -- raning from jury duty and voting rights to what
to do if you are arrested to their rights as renters and how
to build and keep a good credit rating.
When Mrs. Paige Williams (pictured above), district
attorney-elect, and Mrs. Jennifer Vogel (seated in center
below) entered the Nocona High School Auditorium only
one of the seniors who were already 18-vears-old had reg-
istered to vote. A dozen more (pictured below) filled out
their voter registration cards Monday so they will be able
to cast their first vote as adults for President of the United
States of America.

Dear editor:
I was recently in your
community for what was
planned as a one day visit
that turned into five.
Enjoyed the ball glove
factory. My first glove, a
Nakona, was given to me by
my dad in the mid 1950s.
Still have it.
I was impressed with
your downtown renovations
and the museum.
Had great meals at Times
Forgotten Steakhouse and
Fenoglio's Station. Really
good barbecue.
Finally, the folks at the
beautiful Veranda Inn were
the perfect hosts. Real Texas
hospitality was expressed by
all.
I will visit your area
again. Hopefully for years to
come.

funded by any state agency.
The Nocona program has
chosen to feed these folks
who actually have qualified
for funding. Unfortunately
state funds have been in
short supply, so funds are
raised each year to keep the
program going. It costs
approximately $960 to feed
one person for one year, so
about $38,000 needs to be
raised.
The Nocona community
is a huge supporter of this
program, and everyone in the
community is invited to
come to the event and enjoy
a great evening benefiting
this important community
need. Tickets are $50 per
person and can be bought at
the Senior Center or reserved
for pickup at the door. For
more information, call the
center at 825-3148.

walks around the border of
the courthouse square.
"They want us to put our
plans to replace the roof on
hold, and instead take our
$500,000 and spend it on an
architect to develop a plan
and then apply for the eight
round of grants - four years
from now - that we MAY
get," County Judge Tommie
Sappington reported. "I told
them that I had a problem
with that word 'may'."
"I had been led to believe
that there were some funds
left over from the seventh
round that we could apply
for, but I learned there was
not any money left over.
And if we applied, it would
be four years down the
road," Sappington said.
"And if we spend the
$500,000 on the architect
there is no guarantee the
county would then have the
15% for its share of the
(grant) match in four years
for its part of an $8-10 mil-
lion grant, IF we get the
grant," the judge said.
"There is no guarantee we
would get the grant. We
would have to compete with
other counties."
Sappington said he and
Mrs. Essary took away from
the meeting their impression
that: THC officials want the
county to spend the money
on an architect; the state
agency will not budge on
demanding that the windows
be replaced with "insulated
single pane" wooden framed
windows; and once the coun-
ty gets around to replacing
the roof after round eight
funding cycle, the county
must replace the clay tile
roof with another clay tile
roof rather than the lighter
weight, metal look-alike
roof.
"I am going to wait until
we have moved into the
Courthouse Annex and
cleared the second floor, or
are about to, then go out for
bids for a roof," Sappington
stated explaining that the
court is very concerned
about further damage from
existing roof leaks.
"The (Texas) Historical
Commission wants to come
to talk to the commissioner's
court, but they cannot come
until after the first of the
year. So I will see if they will
come meet with the court in
January," Sappington said.
Both of those actions may
come at about the same time.
There have been reports
the THC has restrictions on
when the court can make any
repairs, with or without THC
approval.

our presence," the sheriff
said. "The traffic problems
from last time weren't there
this time. He had three park-
ing areas, and people had to
purchase their parking pass-
es and tickets off site and not
at the venue."
As a result the traffic
snarls experienced along FM
3064 before were virtually
non-existent, the sheriff said.
Shuttle buses provided trans-
portation to and from the
general admission parking
lot to the site.
No admission was
allowed between 11 p.m. and
7 a.m. to cut down on late
night driving. No one under
the age of 18 allowed inside
the RWP gates without a
guardian, which cured some
isolated situations at the pre-
vious events of parents drop-
ping off teenagers and leav-
ing them unsupervised.
"There was just one
Careflight," the sheriff said
of them helicopter ambu-
lance service, "although
there were several ambu-
lance runs from a cut up fin-
ger to broken bones."

of historical buildings to
notify them of proposed ren-
ovations, the judge
explained. The state has six
months to review their pro-
posals and respond,
Sappington said. Afterwards
the county can either acqui-
esce to the THC or make the
changes they proposed.
Sappington said despite
statements by Ms. Gammage
last Tuesday that she "had
never received the county's
package" or proposed reno-
vations, "I wish I had taken
my packet with me Tuesday,
but I have an email from her
in September of last year
stating that she found my
package in her spam folder,
and she had not checked her
spam folder for several
months, so I met their
requirement of 6 months.
"I'm still going to wait
until after the first of the year
to go out for bids, and ask if
the THC wants to come and
meet with the court," he said.
