Kids In Action
• The Greensheet and VOLUNTEER HOUSTON collaborate to bring you the following information on
• volunteer opportunities for young people.
•
# COMB THE BEACH as a volunteer at the annual "Texas Adopt-a-Beach Fall Cleanup", taking place
September 23 all along the Texas Gulf Coast. Teaming up with other volunteer "beach buddies," you
# can help remove debris that spoils the appearance of our shoreline and poses hazards to marine
# wildlife. (Some of the debris will be recycled to fund other environmental improvement projects.) Call'
# now to reserve a place for yourself on the beach of your choice. There is no minimum age if
# accompanied by an adult; otherwise the minimum age is 15.
# SAY "NO" TO DRUNK DRIVING by participating in a September 23 fundraising walk to support the
^ campaign against this all-too-common social problem. Called "Strides for Changes," the walk will take
place at Sam Houston Race Park. You're invited to participate as a walker, or you can volunteer to help |
# with setup, registration, and assisting at various points along the route. A barbecue cook-off will take
^ place immediately after the event, and volunteers will be entitled to enjoy all the spicy fare offered.
^ The minimum age for volunteers is 14.
^ JOIN WITH OTHER VOLUNTEERS in a visit to local nursing homes on Saturday, September 9, in honor
of Grandparents Day. If you have some time available that morning, plan on coming to any of three
® meeting places (near the Galleria, Willowbrook Mall, or in Kingwood) and teaming with other
volunteers to visit one of several scheduled facilities. You'll be given handmade Grandparents Day
cards and other goodies to share with the persons you visit. There's no minimum age for participation,
but each volunteer will be responsible for arranging his or her transportation to the meeting place and |
to the nursing home visited.
I HORSE LOVERS will enjoy the chance to volunteer for a program that provides therapeutic horseback
. riding opportunities for disabled youngsters. As a "side walker" you'll accompany these kids while they |
enjoy the special thrill of a horseback stroll in a protected environment. The activity is supervised by
) physical therapists and complies with standards by the North American Riding for the Handicapped
I Association. The riding is done at a farm in Richmond, Texas on Wednesdays, Fridays, and occasional
Saturdays between 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Minimum age for volunteers: 14.
WATCH YOURSELF GROW by helping tend a community garden that is used to produce vegetables for
organizations serving the needy. The sponsoring agency will teach you all you need to know to seed,
weed, and feed a garden successfully. Your commitment can be short-term or ongoing and the hours
are very flexible. There are community garden sites throughout Houston from which to choose.
Minimum age: none, if able to do the work needed.
FOR SELF-STARTERS: Help elderly neighbors with chores they have difficulty doing themselves. Some
examples of easy-to-do but very helpful activities are: mowing the lawn, putting out garbage, pulling up
weeds, painting a fence, etc.
DID YOU KNOW that the dollar value of the time contributed last year by volunteers in the greater
Houston metropolitan area is estimated at over 4 billion dollars?
