t however, excels all kindB
of clover in nutritious riehness as
a food crop and it seems to be per-
fectly well adapted to the feeding
of horses,| attle sheep or hogs, es-
pecially when cured as hay.—Col-
orado Live Stock Record.
Wherever it is introduced in
any given locality it seems to take
possession of the ground, and it
has been claimed that it strikes its
roots to a depth of twenty feet in
the ground, even through hard
clay soil and this is the condition
that enables it to grow fresh and
green where grass would wither
and die. In Nevada, California
and the cotton states it continues
its growth from year's end to
year's end, and in some districts
as high as eight crops have, accor-
ding to report been cut and made
into hay in a single year and there
is hardly any locality where two
crops of alfalfa hay cannot be se-
cured in one season after the grass
becomes firmly rooted and set.
One great advantage in raising
this crop is found in the fact that
in all the arid districts the climate
is such that the cutting and curing
of the alfalfa for hay can always
be done at exactly the right time
and in the right way, and it is
claimed that the hay will make
cattle, hogs and sheep as fat as
need be for slaughtering, and we
can see no reason to doubt this
claim, for within the past two
or three years some of our far
western cattlemen have fattened
cattle very well 011 hay made of
the wild grass which is found
growing in some of the valleys
and park^in the Rocky Mountain
country.
The Language of Fans,
An old bachelor who went to
church last Sunday evolved a phi-
losophy of the fan while he wasn't
hearing the sermon. ''Young
givlo" he said, 'Tan themselves
rapidly as if to say I'll catch him,
I'll catch him, I'll eatch him;
while matrons are more calm
about it, and teach their fans to
softly murmur I've—got—him,
I've—got—him, I've—got—him;
whjle fans in the hands of widows
tell the sad story as plainly as pos
sible I've—lost—him, I've—lost
him, I've—lost—him."—[N. Y.
