The courses of the Speech Department are divided into six areas
of concentration: public address and homiletics, theatre, speech correction,
radio, and radio speech education, and oral interpretation.
Courses may be selected from these fields for a comprehensive speech
major leading to the Master of Arts degree.
Departmental Requirements for the Degree
Prerequisites: A Bachelor of Arts degree or the equivalent.
Major: A minimum of 24 semester hours, including a thesis, must
be completed in the Department of Speech. One of the departmental
fields listed above may be selected as an area of concentration, but
courses must be included from at least two other departmental fields.
Minor: The remaining six hours must be taken in one or more
of the following fields: Bible, business administration, education,
English, music, psychology, or social science.
Foreign Language: A reasonable proficiency in an acceptable
foreign language, preferably German or French, is required, to be evidenced
in one of the following ways:
1. By submitting college credit equivalent to that required for
the bachelor's degree in speech in this institution; or
2. By demonstrating ability to read literature of the major field
in the language, the examining committee to be composed of one representative
from the Department of Modern Languages and one representative
from the candidate's major department.
