Aims and Purposes
The charter of Howard Payne College contains the following statement:
"The purpose of said corporation is the encouragement, support,
maintenance, and promotion of education under Christian influence and
auspices, with the view to the development of character, and to the
advancement of the gospel of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and the
extension of the Kingdom of God among men."
The College believes its students will be most benefitted and its
purpose best served by a broad-based liberal arts program, co-educational
as dictated by the founders-where its students may receive a
quality education in the sciences, the humanities, the aesthetics and the
Christian religion.
Believing that only through the knowledge of the truth will men be
free, Howard Payne College spares no effort in encouraging its students
to seek the truth-by encouraging mental discipline, clean, independent,
accurate and noble thought within the Christian concept of the dignity
of man and freedom of the human spirit.
Howard Payne is obligated to train future Christian leaders-both
those who will work full time in church-related vocations, and those
who will contribute through teaching, business and other positions of lay
leadership.
The College believes there is no conflict between the fundamental
Christian principles found in the New Testament and the basic American
ideals found in the Constitution in general and the Bill of Rights in
particular.
Specifically, within the framework of the Christian environment the
entire College seeks:
1. To encourage critical thinking.
2. To acquire knowledge in the arts and sciences.
3. To develop skill in the use of language.
4. To nurture discriminating taste for the arts.
5. To stimulate creative work.
6. To maintain good mental and physical health.
7. To foster intelligent citizenship.
8. To develop understanding of other people and the world.
9. To prepare for an adequate vocation.
10. To instill a deeper sense of ethical and religious views.3
