BULLETIN OF HOWARD PAYNE COLLEGE
1958-Bible Building purchased with gift of $50,000 from Mr. and
Mrs. Wi. L. Fleming of Fort Worth plus:additional $50,000
from other friends and alumni.
1959-Campaign launched for New Science Building. Administative
offices renovated.
1960-Completion of renovation and dedication of Fleming Religion
Center. Fountain of Freedom constructed and dedicated.

The history of Daniel Baker College may be summed up as
follows:
1888-Presbyterian Synod at Albany resolved to build a college in
Brownwood.
1889-Mr. M. J. and S. R. Coggin donated block on which was
located the Coggin Academy, Brown County's first High
School, part of the academy building still standing on the
campus.
1890-Administration Building completed.
1921-Coggin Memorial Chapel completed.
Coggin Endowment established.
1930-Daniel Baker became an independent Christian college.
1946-Daniel Baker became a senior college of the Southwestern
University System.
1950-Daniel Baker became the Episcopal College of the Southwest.1953-Consolidated with Howard Payne College- of Liberal Arts,
Daniel Baker became the Daniel Baker College of Agriculture
and Useful Arts.
BROWNWOOD
Brownwood, county seat of Brown County, is a prosperous trade
center for residents of at least six Central Texas counties.
Highways 67, 84, 183, 279 and 377 link Brownwood with all
major cities of the state.
Water in abundance is one of Brownwood's truly great assets.
Lake Brownwood, eight miles north of the city, contains 140,000
ac-re feet of water at spillway level, including some 8,000 acres of
su face water, and 96 miles of shore line. Modern facilities are
available for swimming, boating, fishing, water sports, picnicking
and camping.
The 25-acre District 16 Baptist Encampment is located along
Lake Brownwood's southern shore line, nine miles north of Brownwood.
The grounds are equipped with a large tabernacle, a number
of small meeting places, kitchen, dining hall, and numerous cottages
