The General College
Geraldine Boyd, Dean
The instructional program of the General College is integrated through the grouping of courses
into the Department of General Education and three divisions of instruction which include two or
more related departments.
Department of General Education
General education at Howard Payne University is concerned with the mental, physical, cultural
and spiritual development of each student. It is believed that preparation to deal with the many
aspects of modern life is best obtained through an understanding of major events in man's history
and of the physical, social and spiritual world in which he lives.
General education, in so far as the individual is concerned, attempts to assist the student in
developing a critical mind capable of making decisions which reflect intellectual insight and an
appreciation of a Christian way of life. General education is concerned with problems all men
have in common and is an interrelated, integrated experience designed to meet the basic needs of
every student. It is concerned with knowledge, skills and attitudes essential to the citizen who
assumes moral and social responsibilities.
The following General Education courses listed on the following page must be completed by all
