Communication Arts
The Department of Communication offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree, the
Bachelor of Science degree, or the Bachelor of Science in Education degree. Areas of concentration
that are available for the Bachelor of Arts degree are offered from the following disciplines:
Drama, Journalism, and Speech. Areas of concentration that are available for the Bachelor of
Science degree are offered from the following disciplines: Journalism and Radio-Television. Areas
of concentration for the Bachelor of Science in Education are available in the disciplines of
Drama, Journalism, and Speech. Teacher certification requirements are specified under the
School of Education.
Speech and Drama Cores
The program of Speech and Drama provides a liberal arts approach to the study of human interaction
and communication. The program is designed to serve students who want to use communication
more effectively in their daily affairs, who want to become oral communication specialists,
who want to teach speech or drama, or who desire to work in professional theatre. Students seeking
teacher certification in speech or drama should refer to the School of Education for the degree
programs.
Speech Core
A core in Speech offers a curriculum leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree. Students having an
area of concentration in Speech are required to complete twenty-four to thirty-six semester hours
of work including Speech 1310, 2311, 2314, 3310, 3341, 3381, 4312, 4314, and two hours of
speech forensic activities. To complete the area of concentration, courses in related areas may be
taken in any department of the University that will enable the student to make progress toward his/
her vocational objectives.
SPEECH 1101-4609. SPECIAL STUDIES.
Special courses not a part of the regular schedule but offered on an irregular schedule.
Prerequisite: None. One to six semester hours
SPEECH 1117-3117. FORENSICS ACTIVITIES.
Structured for all students who have interest in participation in any form of extracurricular
speech activities. Students may compete in speech contests on the intercollegiate level or may be
involved in speech activities in the community. Three semester hours may be counted toward the
core. Fall, Spring.
Prerequisite: None. One semester hour
SPEECH 1310. FUNDAMENTALS OF SPEECH COMMUNICATION.
An introduction to the principles and fundamental skills of effective oral communication to
establish an appreciation of the nature and uses of speech. This course will provide the student
with opportunities for improvement in various communication situations including public speaking.
Required in the Speech core. Fall, Spring, Summer.
