The General College
Requirements for a teaching field in English for Secondary schools must comply with departmental
requirements which include: English 1311, 1312, 2351, 2373, 3xxx level-six hours: 4336,
4xxx level-three hours.
Option I for the B.S. degree in elementary education requires: English 1311, 1312, 2351, 2373,
and six advanced hours including 4336. Option II is the same as Option I except nine advanced
hours are required.
Option II for the B.S. degree in elementary education requires: all of the courses listed in Option
I above and one additional upper level courses.
ENGLISH 1101-4609. SPECIAL STUDIES.
Special courses not a part of the regular schedule but offered on an irregular schedule.
Prerequisite: None. One to six semester hours
ENGLISH 1300. BASIC ENGLISH.
An intensive course in the fundamental structure of the English language. Required for those
students who score twelve or below on the English section of the ACT. Recommended for foreign
students. Elective credit only and does not count toward a degree.
Prerequisite: None. Three semester hours
ENGLISH 1311. ENGLISH COMPOSITION I.
A review of grammar, punctuation and spelling with intensive practice in writing the short story
exposition paper. Fall, Spring.
Three semester hours
ENGLISH 1312. ENGLISH COMPOSITION II.
Readings in expository prose and practice in writing the long expository paper, including the
library research paper. Fall, Spring.
Prerequisitie: ENGLISH 1311. Three semester hours
ENGLISH 2351. LITERATURE OF BRITAIN.
A survey of British literature from its beginnings to contemporary writing. Emphasis on major
writers. Fall, Spring, Summer on demand.
Prerequisite: English 1311, 1312. Three semester hours
ENGLISH 2373. LITERATURE OF AMERICA.
A survey of major American writings from the Colonial Period to the present. Fall, Spring,
Summer.
Prerequisite: English 1311, 1312. Three semester hours
ENGLISH 3311. THE DEVELOPMENT OF DRAMA.
A study of the major trends and figures in the development of drama up to Ibsen.
Prerequisite: See footnote'. Three semester hours
ENGLISH 3321. READINGS IN SHAKESPEARE.
A study of the major Shakespearean dramas. Fall.
Prerequisite: See footnote'. Three semester hours
ENGLISH 3324. PRINCIPLES OF LITERARY CRITICISM.
Designed for the student beginning the advanced study of literature. Several critical approaches
and their applications are studied in depth. Fall.
