382 HISTORY OF JOHNSON
At the age of eighteen years lie offered his
services to the Confederacy, enlisting in Company
C., Parsons' Regiment; he was soon
afterward stricken with a fever from which
he did not recover in time to take part in any
of the important engagements of the war.
When peace had been declared he went to
work for his father, and in 1867 he began
farming and dealing in live-stock on his own
account. In this vocation he has certainly
found his calling, if success be any guarantee
of his fitness. He owns 1,250 acres of land,
350 acres being under cultivation; for the
past three years he has been one of the heaviest
stock dealers in the country, and has fed
about 1,000 annually; the present year (1891)
he has 1,100 head, but will probably not
place more than 1,000 upon the market. In
addition to the land that he owns he leases
some of the largest ranches in the county
over which his herds of cattle roatn at will.
With the exception of $1,500 to $2,000, Mr.
Bradley has accumulated his property through
his own efforts, and has done it through
legitimate channels and not by speculation.
Mr. Bradley was married in 1881, to Miss
Jennie Shirley, a native of Kentucky and a
daughter of J. T. and Catherine (Ford) Shirley,
who were also natives of the Blue Grass
State. Mr. Shirley removed to Texas in
1877. He and his wife had born to them
twelve children, eight of whom lived to be
grown: Jennie, the wife of the subject of
this sketch, Sallie, Mattie, William, Lida,
James, Edna and Lora. The father is still
living and resides in this county; the mother
passed away in the year 1883. Mr. andMrs. Bradley are the parents of five children:
Arthur Lee, Katie, Houston, J. B., Jr., and
Ula. Mr. Bradley is a member of the Missionary
Baptist Church.
7 ARTIN McNULTY CRANE was
born in Grafton, Taylor county,
West Virginia, November 17, 1853.
His parents were Irish. His mother died
when he was four years old, after which he
removed with his father to Kentucky, and
from there to Stewart county, Tennessee,
where his father died in 1860. He remained
in Tennessee until 1870, when he came to
Texas, settling in Johnson county, in Deceimber
of the same year, where he has continued
to reside. The first business in which he engaged
in Texas was farming; then he went
to school and taught alternately until 1877,
at which time he was admitted to the bar,
having in the meantime completed his legal
course and stood a satisfactory examination
in open court. In 1878 he was chosen
Prosecuting Attorney of Johnson county over
three opponents. This compelled him to
measure lances with the best legal talent in
the State; he was re-elected to the office in
1880. Two years later he resigned and devoted
himself exclusively to his practice. In
1884 he was elected to the Legislature, receiving
a majority of 805 votes over two
opponents. He declined to stand for re-election.
In 1888, the Democracy of his county
tendered him the nomination for the Legislature,
which he declined, but he canvassed hisHISTORYT OFi JOHNSON02
