Until about 50 years ago scien-
tists believed that the great earth
works found in the valleys of the
Mississippi and Ohio river basins
were the creations of an ancient and
distinct race of men called Mound
Builders These Stoneage people
were supposed to have become ex-
tinct Boon alter the arrival of the In
dians Modern anthropologists do
not accept this Idea and the work
of Cyrus Thomas of the Smithsoni-
an Institution has finally settled the
argument and established the the-
ory that the MoundBuilders were
themselves Indians and not i sepa-
rate race of mankind at all Study
of the skulls found in countless
mounds led to this conclusion
