ously to Private First Class Billy
D Harrell USMCR for serv-
ice as set forth In the following
For conspicuous gallantly and
ontrepidlty while serving with
the 3rd Battalion 7th Marines
1st Marino Division in action
against enemy Japanese forces
on Pelellu Palau Islands on the
28th of September 1944
Observing a wounded man ly-
ing in front of the lines and ex-
posed to cjjemy fire Pfc Harrell
unhesitatingly rushed across an
area swept by hostile machine
gun fire and rifle flro and
promptly administered firstaid
but while attempting to remove
Ills helpless comrade to a cover-
ed position was himself mortal-
ly wounded
Pfc Hanells splendid initia-
tive and unselfish efforts on be
hall of another at the risk of his
own life were in keeping with
the highest traditions of tho
United States naval service
He gallantly gave his life for
his comrade

COMMERCE IS
REORGANIZED
The Canadian chamber of
commerce was reorganized at a
meeting held In the city hall
here Monday night
Charles R Douglass was elect-
ed President Darrell Wiggins
A number of things for the
betterment of tho community
were brought up and discussed
Action on them was left up to
the board
The second Monday night of
each month was decided upon
as the regular meeting time of
tho body Everyone is asked to
get behind the new chamber of
commerce and back it In every
project for the betterment of the
community

The Johnson grocery store on
tho highway sold here last week
to R N Matthews and W P Var

credit association here for the
past few years but was reared
In the grocery business and was
manager of the local Best Way
store for many years
Mr Varnell has had charge of
the meat department at the Mil-
ler rood Market for the past
four years

Passes Away
Mrs I A Wood longtime res
ident of Hemphill county pas-
sed away at her home here yes-
terday morning She had been
In ill health for many years and
became critically 111 about two
months ago She was 66 years

Mrs Leila Mae Hampton Wood
came to this section of tho coun-
try when only seven years of age
and lived with her parents in
old Canadian across the river be-
fore the present town was found-
ed She was married to I A
Bert Wood In 1901
Mrs Wood had been a member
of the Church of Christ for the
past 40 years and was noted for
her faithfulness She was a de-
voted wife and mother and was
loved by all who knew her
Besides her husband she Is
survived by one son and two
daughters R A Wood of Ama

Tex and Mrs Mary Williams
of Canadian by two sisters and
one brother Mrs Emma Mat
ticks of Canadian Mrs Carl
Swires of Amarlllo and Harve
Hampton of Canadian and by

this afternoon In the Church of
Christ at 3 oclock with Brother
Paul Herndon officiating
School Carnival
Wednesday Night
The annual school carnival
sponsored this year by the honor
society will be held at the city
hall Wednesday night
The students and teachers
have been working hard the past
few weeks to make this on of
the best Halloween celebrations
ever held In Canadian
Besides the usual refreshment
stands delicious home made
pics and cakes will be offered
for sale and there will be all
kinds of games of chance darts

Little Kay Marlene Smith 9
ycarold daughter of Mr and
Mrs J W Smith passed away at
the Mayo clinic Saturday even-
ing at 610 of a rare and Incur-
able disease
Kay had been 111 for the past
seven months and had received
treatment at many different
places She attended school at
Hart and would have been In the
fourth grade this year
Funeral services were held
In tho First Baptist church here
Wednesday afternoon at three
oclock with the Rev Fern A
Miller officiating
Besides her parents the little
girl leaves to mourn her death
one brother Kenneth 11 jears
old and her grandparents Mr
and Mrs S A Risley of Cana-
dian Otte Smith of Apache
Okla and Mrs Wyman of Law-
