CANADIAN TEXAS FRIDAY DECEMBER 7 1915
QUE GUEST EDITORIAL
By Major E J Cussen
I had a discussion with a
friend of mine the other day
The topic was the administration
of our government My friend
said some things that caused me
to believe that for some time I
have been content to drift with
the great tide of people who per-
mit others to think for them
Here arc some of the things my
friend said
So you still think that the
people of the United States make
their own laws that they are a
sovereign people Yes I know
that the Declaration of Inde-
pendence lays down that prin-
ciple as a fundamental Theo-
retically it is a fact practically
It is a myth How do you select
the makers of your laws > Some
lawyer that never made a suc
cess of his own business decides
to be your representative Ho
runs for ofTIce He makes a lot of
promises that are Just as empty
as his head He has a glib
tongue a practiced handshake
and a look of grim determination
that you might see on the face
of a hungry cat that has Just
discovered a dish of cream You
vote him into office and you hear
no more from him unless you
write him your views on some
matter Then you receive a re-
ply that is a political master-
piece It means nothing any
thing everything Shortly belore
the next election your chosen
representative will use his
Frank to Inform you that
through his efforts your govern
ment has procured an improved
variety of preserved turnips
originally raised by Pappy Yo
kum in Dog Patch and that you
will receive some seed In a few
days With these pleasant con
tacts you become satisfied with
the peoples choice and you pay
and pay and pay
The Master drove the money
changersout of the Temple Why
do you permit them to occupy
the legislative scats In your Na-
tional Capitol Are you In favor
of giving every Congressman a
pension If you are not what
are you doing to prevent their
voting themselves one Do you
believe that every administra-
tive bureau upon which the al-
phabet has been exhausted
should continue to function af-
ter the reason for Its being no
longer exists You have a right
to find out whether or not any
particular governmental agency
Is contributing to the common
good and If not it is your right
to have it abolished because it
is you who pay the bills
The boys that won the war
are coming home Have you tried
to find out whether the socalled
G I Bill of Rights affords them
the full measure of consideration
to which they are entitled Ask
some veteran who has tried to
obtain a loan under the provi-
sions of that bill what success
he has had There should be no
class distinction In dealing with
veterans As the law stands now
an officer before being discharg-
ed Is given accrued terminal
leave and pay the rank and file
of the army receives no such con-
sideration Why deny terminal
leave with pay to the men with
mud behind their ears who had
to advance another step and fire
another shot no matter how
their body and mind was ex-
hausted Let us treat them all
alike A great many civilians
made more money during the
war than they ever made before
Certainly they were contributing
to the war effort but they were
doing it the easy way What are
you going to do about adjusting
compensation for the boys who
won the war the hard way
These things are the responsi-
bility of the people of the United
States and In these as in all
other matters that vitally affect
our people we the people
should sptak from the high-
ways and byways of the nation
until our voice Is heard In Wash-
Ington
