Vben ironing remember that
double thicknesses such as hems
collars and cuds should be ironed
first on the wrong side then on
the right
Leave about an Inch of top on
carrots when preparing them for
grating This serves as a button
on which to hold while grating the
carrots and prevents fingers from
getting too close to the grater
Instead of sewing snaps on very
fine material sew them to a piece
of silk tape and whip the tape
along the hem where the snaps
are needed Prevents snaps from
cutting through when garment is
ironed
To remove smoke from a room
quickly dip a towel in vinegar
and hot water equal parts wring
out and whirl it gently over the
head about the room
When hanging clothes to dry
hang large items first because
smaller ones can be fitted into re-
maining spaces easily
When you wash your ironing
board cover put it back on the
board while still damp and fasten
securely When dry the cover
will fit smoothly This same idea
can be applied to slipcovers
For pressing dark wool clothes
use a piece of dark wool next to
the clothing and a dampened cot-
ton cloth on top
Dont open the oven door too
soon after baking has begun Wait
until onequarter of baking time
has elapsed before pecking into
oven Otherwise cake may fall
Two thin coats of paint give bet-
ter results than one thick coat
Sandpaper lightly between coats

Furniture Must Date From
Before 1831 to Be Antique
Just how old docs a piece of fur
niture have to be before it can
properly be called an antique
The year 1830 has been accepted
by antique furniture dealers in
America as the last year of ar-
tistic merit consistent with U S
treasury department rulings to
warrant the stamp of antiquity
Furniture produced after 1830 is
considered semiantique In Amer-
ica nothing Victorian has been ac-
cepted s antique but in Great
Britain the first year of Victorias
reign 1838 has been accepted

I was ambling along In my car
counting poiti and watching my
nervous windshield wiper as It
slapped out a clear segment of a
circle when X spied a smallish man
walking ahead The back of his
neck seemed a bit scrawny and a
little round hat sat on top of his head
as though a vagrant breeze had
dropped it there
He was carrying a small bunch
of flowers When I pulled alongside
I asked him tf he wanted a lift
His clothes were limp with the
steady drizzle and he seemed to
have walked a long way Ive only
got a short way to go now he said
It aint hardly worth bothering

Martha spent her whole life trying

Of course there wasnt any blonde

looked in when they saw a light and
asked the road to Cloverdale
Martha wasnt very strong and

it was her heart I didnt pay much

during that time Martha got somt
of the red back In her cheeks and
she moved around more lively than
she had in years She made me
get a dinner coat with all the fixing
that went with it She had the studs
screwed In the shirt four days be-
fore the banquet
After we wrote the speech we
went over It here andthere until It
sounded right Each evening after
dinner wed go to the kitchen where
people couldnt look in and Id stand
on a chair and make the speech
I must have delivered that speech
at least fifty times
Well the big night Anally came
When I got dressed up I looked pret

post office told mc his wife was like
that and as long as they didnt get
any excitement or shock they could

ways rested when I told her but she
never really rested even when she
was lying down Her mind was
working She was thinking how she
could make the town know what a
great husband she had I tried to
explain that it didnt matter as long
as we were happy But she kept on
being riled I Just kind of hoped
something big would happen to me
for Marthas sake
Well sir It was like the hand of
fate Something big did happen at
last At least it was big to Martha
and me Mr Ciawson the presi-
dent of the mill was getting lip a
dinner in honor of the town council
and asked me to make a speech
When I came home and told Mar
tha that evening she nearly jumped
out of her skin I had never made
a speech before In my life I was
scared stiff at the thought of it But
Martha was going to prove every-
thing she had said about me
through that speech I just had to
show Mister Ciawson and the ccun
cilmen she was right
The dinner was two weeks off and

waving goodby and looked ten
years younger I was sort of choked
up and happy I was only sorry she
couldnt come along It was Just
for men you know
I left my car in front of the house
and walked down to the Clifton Ho-
tel so I could go over my speech
just one last time When I got there
I said hello to everybody even
Longyear president of the bank Id
never spoken to him before I felt
pretty important
HpHEY put me on the platform next
to Charlie Simmons who is quite
a wit around these parts He has
one of those ventriloquist dummies
and also does card tricks He told
me a few jokes and I laughed al-
though I didnt listen I took a taste
of the sour but after that I couldnt
eat a thing The speech kept pound-
ing In my head
After the ice cream Mister Claw
son rapped for order and made a
flowery speech about the town coun-
cil Then the head of the council
said a lot of nice things about the
mill and how much good it had
done the town More speeches fol-
lowed Each time the toastmaster
got ready to call on the next speak
er I shook all over thinking it might
be me It seemed that everybody
in town was making a speech My
mouth got dry
Then Simmons got up and did his
dummy act and some card tricks
He went over to the piano and sang
some songs People called for more
They all laughed and sang with him
I looked at my watch It was eleven
oclock
I managed to get my head clear
and quickly thought over the first
few paragraphs of my speech They
were saving me for the last A sort
of surprise I thought Then Mister
Ciawson got up and his voice sound
ed far off He said some of the boys
wanted to play poker and others
wanted to sit around and chat It
was too late for more speeches
Alter hearing Simmons any more
talk would be tame It was
wonderful evening and everybody
had enjoyed it thoroughly They all
stood up and sang Auld Lang Syne
The dinner was over
Vou cant blame me for not being
able to think clearly after that
was so disappointed I got kind of
numb I sneaked out through the
back door and went home Martha
ran down to the front gate and
grabbed me around the neck She
cried How did It goT
I said They didnt call on me
I shouldnt have told her the truth
It was a dreadful blunder
Painting Cellar Floor
Rubber Jiase paints frequently
are used for painting cement floors
and basements because they are
resistant to alkali which would ad-
versely affect some other types ol
paint Before applying rubber bass
paints to a cement floor any old
paint should be removed with paint
remover all residue from the palnl
remover washed oft with turpentine
or mineral spirits and the floor
thoroughlydried out A further pre
caution before painting cement pel
lar floors either new or old Is to
etch them with muriatic acid solu-
tion Jn the proportion o about one
pint of add to one gallon of water
If the acid solution Is used the floor
should be well rinsed to remove
traces of the add and then thor-
oughly dried before painting Twc

THE Book o Eccleslasles written
by Solomon D C 977 is profit-
able In the fact that It discloses the
findings of a very remarkable man
on life Solomon
tells us that he had
tried every tempt-

world but found It
vanity Vanity of
vanities all is van-
ity he declares
Solomon Is of-
ten referred to as
the wisest of men
He does not make
this claim nor
would 1 suggest It
As a matter of fact
Solomon was a very unwise man In
many of the manifestations of his
life He had every advantage but
yielded to selfish pursuits of pleas-
ure when he might have been serv-
ing his day and generation by the
will of God
Why do I point to Solomon as an
unwise man From his own testi-
mony I gave my heart to know
wisdom and to know madness and
folly I perceived that this also Is
vexation of spirit For In much wis
dom Is much grief and he that In
creascth knowledge increaseth sor
Excellent Advice
EVEN so Solomon was ready by
the time he wrote Eccleslastes
to give some excellent advice He
had discovered that pomp and cere
mony are meaningless that they
turn at last to ashes
For example He God bath

time chapter 3 verse 11 Solo-
mon had dealt In the artificial
He had worn the most costly
robes lived In the finest palaces
had gardens set up to please any
passing whim
But now that he has come to see
the vanity of men he can at last

Seeking the Best in Life
COLOMON by his own testimony
missed much of the finer things
of life but he admonishes the read-
er to profit by his mistake and seek
the best In life For example ln
chapter 2 verse 24 Solomon says
There Is nothing better for a man
than that he should eat and drink
and that he should make his soul
enjoy good ln his labour
Every boy and girl In the world
knowa the Joy of honest work at
least I hope so Have you grown
a beautiful flonerr A vegetable
garden Cut a cord of fire wood
Then you know that work la one
of the essential ways of seeking
the best In life
Then Solomon comes to the first
eight verses of the last chapter a
golden sectionfor memory It Is
one of the Arst passages of Scrip
ture I ever learned I trust every
young person reading this column
will commit that passage to mem
cry If you have not already done so
Testing Dies Philosophies
SOLOMON concludes his confes
sions with this probing declara-
tion For God shall bring every
work Into Judgment with every se <
cret thing whether It be good or
whether It be ovR
What Is be saying Be Is remind
lng us that whatever may be our
philosophy of life such philosophy
together with our commitments
thereto will be tested out under the
white light of Gods ultimate truth
My conclusion Is that I desire but
one thing to find and follow the will
of Pod which Is always right and
always tx t
