HEMPinLL COUNTY NEWa CANADIAN TEXAS
By J WALTER GRIST
Several of our stockmen havei
been having a few1 troubles get
ring their calves started off for
the winter and I would like 1o
offer a suggestion or two that
might help
This would apply to calves re
ceived from ether places as well
as those cut off from their moth-
ers on native ground
My suggestions do not apply
to the trade that Is to people
who buy calves for resale In two
cr three days or a week but to
those whose owners have a win-
ter home for them
When the calves are first re
ceived or cut off Just hold them
around the corrals on water and
roughage preferably good quali
ty prairie hay for a few days
no cake possibly a week be
fore turning them out In their
respective pastures
This will do four things First
It will accustom them to the
place second It will give them
needed rest especially those
that have been In transit third
It will build up their resistance
to colds and other troubles later
on and fourth it will serve as
a laxative to them and start
their digestive system to work In

who remained until 1300 A D
During the eleventh century they

caves and built cliff dwellings
These were terraced structures of
many as 200 rooms Some
reached the height of four stories
Pottery was well shaped and de
corated Nomadic Indians har
rassed the peaceful farmersnnd
the population began to dwindle
In the year 1270 A D drought
struck the region For 24 years
there was no rainfall Year after
year crops failed springs dried
up villages were abandoned
They drifted southward along the
Rio Grande where today they may
be mixed with the Hop and
Pueblo Indians Not all of the
Indians lived in these caves some

ruins are 7 miles on the rim of tho
canyon
The Sun Temple Is one of the
most Interesting The masonry and
stone work is exceptionally good
to have been made by these
people who had no tools to work
with In the center grew a pine
tree thousands of years ago Tho

the possessions oJ these people
such as baskets beads pottery
arrows beans corn woven cloth
mummies burial shrouds and1
