forward to a happier more complete and friendlier New Year

lives Dcforc us appears a new clean
white page a slab of snow white
marble whereon we must record
the events of the coming year as
they apply to us to our country and
to the world What shall we record
thereon As Longfellow said Life
Is real life Is earnest Let us then
be up and doing with a heart for
any fate still achieving still pur-
suing learn to labor and to wait
On the new page ve might place
our first entry Smile save serve
We can be thankful for another
morning of life We con be thank-
ful for this day for Its failures
which we must acknowledge as les-
sons We must check our faults and
failures We must scatter seeds of
smiles and service so that they may
grow to maturity so that the reap-
ing will not be shame and sorrow
We Mill smile save and serve
DAYS MIXUP
The whole world celebrates New
Years Day but not always on the
same date
The biggest mlxup occurred from
1S52 to 1772 when Europe and Eng-
land observed the New Year on the
same day but at dilTcrcnt tlmcsl In
1552 Pope Gregory HI eliminated
10 days from the Julian calendar
previously in use because It was 11
minutes longer each year than the
astronomical year England did not
adopt the new Gregorian calendar
until 1772 hdwever thus observing
the same holiday at a later day
When translated Into the Grcgo
rian calendar the Jewish New
Years varies from September 6 to
October 4 The Mohammedans not
only celebrate at a different dite
but their calendar Is dated almost
GOO years behind the Gregorian
since It begins with the Prophets
flight from Mecca In A D 022
AT THE beginning of each New
Year two pathways open One
slants downward slow deterioration
clouding and finally blotting out all
mental excellence spiritual appre-
ciation and even physical strength
The other leads to the finer things
of existence ascending gradually to
lofty heights of mind and spirit At
the entrance Life stands with cheery
frectlng and forward Impetus for
all who heed Choose well your wayl
He who lives fully In the year at
hand villi create grandly for the
year that follows Regardless of any
past he who U his best sell today
will find much beauty In tomorrow

A gala occasion In the liven of the
American belles was New Years
Day of former years Each expected
her men friends to accept her hos
pltallty on New Years Day On that
day barriers were lowered a bit and
the strict social form was relaxed
to the oxUnt that the men did not
need special Invitations or formal
Introductions and the young ladles
could talk more openly and act mort
natural than on formal occasions
Fond mammas told their unwed
daughters that among so many
charming and eligible young men
they surely must find one on whom
they could bestow their affections
It must be noted however thai
the young ladies had to be fast work
crs No matter how Informal these
New Years Day calls were it was
a gross breach of propriety for a
young man to stay more than 10
minutes
The theme of New Years Day al- >
ways has been one of Joy Regard-
less of the country or the people
or of the date on which it was cele-
brated Joy marked the spirit In
which It was observed
New Years Day of the Moham
medans is given as October 17 of
the Hebrews as September and of
the Chinese as early February
The ancient Egyptians Phocni
clans and Persians began their year
at the autumnal equinox Septem-
ber 21 and the Greeks until the
fifth century B C at the winter sol
stlce December 21 In 432 n C the
latter altered the New Years Day
to June 21
The ancient Romans celebrated
December 21 but this was altered
to January 1 by Caesar In adopting
the Julian calendar
March 25 was the date observed
among most Christian peoples In
medieval days In Anglo Saxon Eng
land however December 25 was
New Years Day until It was
changed to January 1 at the Nor
man conquest but later it was
changed to March 25 and so re
mained until the English adopted
the Gregorian calendar
I am done with the years that were
I am quits
I am done with the dead and the
old
They are mines worked out 1
delved In their pits
I have saved the grains of gold
Now I turn to the future for wine
and bread
I have bidden the past adieu
I laugh and lift hands to the year
ahead
Come ont I m ready for youl

JESSIE walked slowly through the
park Overhead the sky was
clear making the stars stand out
Tiny pinpoints of light they left no
trace of the storm which had blan-
keted the ground with a thick white
cover She turned and 16oked be-
hind her The solitary tracks she
had made looked lonesome by them-
selves There should be two sets
she thought with a sigh Last New
Years Eve there were two sets
Mine and Jerris The thought of
Jerry made her feel worse She tried
to push It out of her mind See here
Jessie she admonished herself
youre out here to get some exer
else and enjoy yourself Stop being
a fool Its over finished You ano
Jerry are all washed up Forget It
13ut her Inner mind wouldnt let her
Ruth her roommate had the ra
dio going full blast as she opened
the door Gay dancemusic poured
out filling the room with memories
That you Jess She called from
the bedroom
Yeah Jessie took off her pert
little hat and threw It at the closet
door then regaining her self con-
trol she laid ft neatly on the shelf
Wish youd change your mind
and go with us
I have a headache She tried to
get lnterestedin a story It was no
use even the stories were full of
happy couples As happy as Jerry
and I used to be There I go again
Ituth her roommate had the
radio going full blast
she reminded herself why cant I
Just forget him That stupid quar-
rel She tried to remember what It
had been about and couldnt It
seemed very Important at the time
Anyway it had done the trick I
was almost over It too she thought
until the holidays got here
Now If someone would Just play
Rhapsody in Blue Ruths voice
was half mocking
Do I look that bad Jessie
turned around
You look worse Honest honey I
think youre crazy to sit around on
New Years Eve and stew about one
man The world Is full of them
Not like Jerry
Jerrys a great guy all right but
vhy grieve about him the rest of
your life You re only young once
you know
Id just spoil things for the rest
of you You know what happened
the last time I tried It Everything
we would do would remind me of
him
Okay honey Ruth shrugged
her shoulders have It your way
She went back Into the bedroom
and started dressing Ten minutes
later she came out and whirled
around the room How do I look
Jessie looked up from her mag
azlne You look swell Hell prob-
ably want to eat you tonight
Thanks honey Ruth started
fur the door as they heard a knock
It was her date
Jessie sank back down In the
chair as they left I wont cry she
told herself No matter what I
wont cry but I cant stand thai
music any longer She crossed the
room and snapped off the radio The
sudden silence was even worse She
turned It back on and spun the dial
Music on every station Worst of all
it was music from all year Music
Jerry and she had danced to she
thought bitterly The wrong music
for now
She looked up startled by a
knock on the door
Hey a mans voice called out
Open up
It was Jerry HI darling he
smiled If Im not welcome you
can throw me out But I Just had
to try I couldnt stay away
on New Years Eve
Now she thought happily as she
rushed Into hit arms now the mu
sic Is right Just right
Pagans9 New Year
The origin of the celebration of
January 1 has been traced to the
pagans and at one period in the
middle ages the debate over when
the new year arrived became so
furious that It was observed on four
different days March 25 Decem-
ber 35 Easter and by a small group
on January 1 When Augustus re-
vised the calendar January was
idopted

SCRIPTURE Jude 24 23 Revelation
16 22 Matthew
DEVOTIONAL READING Psalm
143 1 13
Gods Eternal Rule
Lesson for December 28 1947
THE last Sunday of another year
brings us to a very fitting lesson
based on passages of Scripture
found In Jude 24 25 Revelation
Dr Newton
16 22 and Matthew
2 The devotional
reading Is Psalm
143 113
Now unto him
that Is able to keep
you from falling
and to present you
faultless before the
presence of his
glory with exceed-
ing Joy to the only
wise God our
Saviour be glory
and majesty do
minion and power both now and
ever Amen Jude 24 25
With this benediction let us pause
at the rapidly ebbing shoreline of
the departing year asking the
meaning of Gods goodness and
mercy as reflected in the Christmas
season and through all the days of
our earthly pilgrimage
As the Wise Men brought their
gilts to the Divine Babe In Beth-
lehem let us today wisely ap-
praise his gifts to us during the
past year and examine our hearts
to see if we are duly grateful
Rich Gifts for Jesus
D EAD again the second chapter of
Matthew particularly the sec-
tion which describes how the Wise
Men brought their gifts rare and
precious gifts to the Son of God
They were rich gifts meaning that
they were costly We dare not
bring anything to Jesus that docs
not represent a measure of sacri-
fice
Contemplating the days ahead
what shall be the test of our gifts
to Jesus Shall we gUe him our
left over time Shall we be satisfied
to bring him a pittance of material
gifts Or shall our gifts like the
gifts of the Wise Men be the first
fruits of all his Increase He asks
for our love our loyalty our glad
and sincere devotion
The Long Look
OW we come to the heart of Sun
days lesson in Revelation 213
He shall dwell with them and they
shall be his peoples Gods eter-
nal rule will be gladly acknowledged
and received if all place their hands
In his hand at the gate of another
yearNineteen
Nineteen fortyeight holds many
question marks People are afraid
They are confused And here
come the message of Sundays
lesson He shall dwell with
them and they shall bo his peo-
ples
The world Is passing away the
lust thereof but they that put their
trust in God shall abide forever and
ever God s eternal rule has been
vindicated in history It will be vin-
dicated again and again in the com-
ing year wherever his people cast
themselves in unwavering faith Into
his care and keeping
We shall do well to read again
and again the chapters In Revela
tion 16 22 and see how all who
walked with God were victorious
and how all who forgot him and for
sook his ways were destroyed
Do we not see the clear applica-
tion for our day and generation
The nations that Forget God do
die
Gods Eternal Rule
T ET us turn now to the verse In
Psalm 145 which reads Thy
Kingdom is an everlasting kingdom
and Thy dominion endureth through-
out all generations
Every thoughtful person is today
wistfully searching for certitude
for the assurance that behind these
dark clouds that lower over our
frightened world the sun still
shines Better that the sun shaU
break through these clouds
Our lesson gives that very as-
surance This Is our Fathers
world He lives He relgost And
he waits to reveal himself to us
In wisdom and power He will not
force himself upon us We must
open the door to him He stands
and knocks
Is that not enough to bring us to
our knees in the fervent prayer
Thy Kingdom come Thy wiU be
done In earth as it Is done In
heaven
Beginning in the home and
spreading into every area of life
may the truth of Sundays lesson
become the watchword of America
and of all lands as we enter upon
the New Year Thus panoplied we
shsil be strong and prepared to
meet and master every problem at
hand and ahead
