WOOD - HUGHES HOME
Though Washington County was established in 1836, it was not
until 1844 that the county seat was permanently established. While
Congress was in session, Jan. 31, 1844, Jesse Farrel and James Hurt
decided to help bring about a decision by offering 100 acres on which
to establish the county site. An election was ordered held, and the
recently established town of Brenham won over Independence, by three
votes. Farrel and Hurt immediately deeded the 100 acres to the Town
Commissioners of Brenham.

The 100 acre gift tract of land was located in the west one-half

Arabella Harrington to Horacio Chriesman, March 27, 1844, the
west 1/2 of her league, for $1,000 cash.....Vol. F, page 289.
Chriesman to William Tom, April 15, 1844, 1034 acres of land out
of the west 1/2 of Harrington League, for $1,000 cash....Vol. F, pg.266.
Wm. Tom to Jesse Farrel & James Hurt, 465 acres out of the 1034
acres of the west 1/2 of Harrington League, April 18, 1844.........
Vol. F, page 333...... amount of cost not shown.
The 100 acre city tract was mapped out shortly after receipt of
