THE CITY.
LARGE FIRE,
Newbouer Bros. Extensive Dry
Col. Giddings estimates the dam-
age to the building at about $2000,
which is fully covered by insur-
ance. The damage to the fixtures
is estimated at about $1800 with
only about $100 insuranco.
Fire.—On Thursday last the
residence and stables of Mr. John
Allcorn, who lives on Mill Creek*
Goods Stock Greatly Damaged
by Fire and Water.
Sunday afternoon about three
o'clock smoko was discovered by
a small boy, issuing from the sec-
ond story windows of Newbouer
Bro's elegant dry goods establish-
ment, locatod in the Giddings build-
ing on tho corner of Maine and
Douglass streets. The fire alarm
was given and the department res-
ponded quickly. The doors wero
broken down and the entiro lower
story was found to bo on fire and
full of smoke. The hose company
mado connection with the fire hy-
drant and soon had a stream of
water playing on the flames; the
pumps wero at work at the pump
house filling tho stand pipe, and
very shortly direct pressure was
put on. Tho steamer was ready
for work about the same time, the
combined efforts of the hose com-
pany and steamer furnished six
heavy streams of water and in
about half or three quarters of an
hour the entiro building was liter-
al ly flooded with water and the
flames extinguished. The fire is
supposod to have originated in tho
vicinity of tho stovo which was
located in tho southeast corner on
the ground floor; the store room is
about 60 feet square and tho ceil-
ing was festoned with drapery con-
sisting of a display of light goods,
suoh as shawls, dross goods, hosie-
ry, underwear, etc., all of the most
inflamable character, and of course
a3 soon as it caught fire it spread
over tlio ceiling like a train of
powder. All tho shelving and
counters were consideraby burned.
Tho second story in which was lo-
cated tho clothing and whole-
sale dry goods department
did not catch on firo as
sevoral streams of water were
thrown there. In tho second story
*i>o damage was entirely from
smoko water. The stock on
tho ground floOl' f.omprisod tho re-
tail dry goods department and con-
tained a large stock of fine goods,
all of which wero damaged almost
beyond recognition by water, fire
and smoke. Mr. Ed. Kewboue1
:and three other gentlemon had left
rtho store only about half an hour
previous to the discovery of the
fire; whon they lelt everything
•was all right. The Giddings build-
ing was erected in 1881 and extends
from Main to Sandy streets, about
180 foot and is sixty feet wide, to
tho alley running north and south.
The afternoon was quite cold, but
notwithstanding this about half
tho male population turned out to
see tho fire. Every member of
the fire department worked like
tho Trojans of old ; not a man boing
present who did not do his duty.
Had the fire occurred late in the
night it is probable that tho entire
block would have been consumed.
Tho extensive grocery establish-
ment of Mr. Thomas Smith, and
the warehouse of Mr. F. Krentzlin
in the same building wero slightly
damaged by water; $200 or $800
will probably cover their loss.
Newbouer Bros, had by far the
largest stock of dry goods in tho
city. Mr. Ed.Newbouer estimates
the stock at $75,000. They wore
insurod for $30,000, viz: In the
Heber Stone & Bro.'a agency, New
Orloans Insuranco Association,
$2500; New York Underwriters.
$5000; Continental, Now York,
$5000; Western, Toronto, Canada?
$5000; City of London, $2500;
Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, $2500}
Fire Insurance Association, Lon
don, $2500, and in Engelke's agen-
cy. in tho ITartford Insurance Co.,
for $5000. As already stated the
damage is vory heavy ahd it is not
ntall likely that tho insurance will
cover tho loss. Tho Messrs. New-
bouer started in business here in
1871 or 72 in a small way and had
steadily increased thoir business.
A fire inquest was began on Mon-
day by Justice Hackworth and ad-
journed over till Tuesday. No
evidence so far has been elicited to
show that tho origin of the tire
was other than purely accidental,
ip the Greenvino neighborhood,
were totally destroyed by fire.
When Mr. Allcorn discovered tho
firo tho entire upper part of tho
dwelling was ablaze and cinders
were dropping down from the coil-
ing; he and his family barely had
timo to escape; everything was a
total loss.
The weather is now tho popular
ihemo of conversation; tho cold
snap still continues. Monday
morning tho mercury was about
20 and did not got much above the
freezing point during the day- At
night it was again cold.
Wood and chicken thieves are
now in their glory; they do their
work between midnight and day-
light. ^ ^
Farmers report that chickens
roosting out of doors wore frozen
to death on their roosts last week.
Don't forgot tb» Farmers
Daughter at tho opera house next
Thursday evening.
Accident.—A son of Mr. Asa
Pennington, who livos near town
was accidentally shot iu tho leg on
Saturday. Tho leg was amputated
on Monday and at last accounts the
boy was in a critical condition.
The total shipment of cotton
from Brenham up to and including
January 9th are 25,033 bales. Very
little was shipped last week.
The foremen of tho Engino com-
pany and the Hose company both
say that tho firo hydrant in front
ofjodon's dwelling was froze on
Saturday morning.

Workers will give an oystor sup-
per at tho Mclntyre hotel to-night.
