The first to oorao were the men of
Portugal, then in the freeh spring'
time of its power. Bartholomew
Diaz discovered the Cape of Btorms,
ss ho called it, in I486, and after
Vasco da Gatnn, in 1497-8, had trao-
ed the southeast coast as far as So-
fala, n little to the nouth of the mod-
ern port of Boira, the Portuguese
established settlements at that place
and farther to the north of it, and
thence carried on a considerable
trade with the natives, chiefly in
gold brought down from the mines
of Mashonaland. Ilowever, the un-
healthinossof tho flat country which
lies between the coast and the inte-
rior plateau checked their projects of
exploration and conquost Individu-
al traders, and sometimes mission-
aries also, penetrated far into the
interior, and articlos which the Por-
tuguese must have brought to Afri-
ca, such as fragments of Indian and
Chinese pottery, and oven, in one or
two instances, small cannon, have
boon found many hundreds of miles
from tboseaboard. But, on the whole,
tho Portuguoso exerted little} influ-
ence on the oountry and its inhabit-
ants.
Tho white population remained
vory small, and it became dograded
by intermarriage with tho Kaffirs,
for in Africa, as well as in Brazil,
tho Portuguese have shown little of
that contempt for the native blacks
and aversion to a mixing of their
blood with tho latter, which have
boon so generally characteristic of
tho Dutch and tho English. During
tho seventeenth and oightoonth cen-
turies tho colonizing foroo of Portu-
gal declined with the decline of her
European power.
She made no further efforts to ox-
plore, and even abandoned some of
hor stations on tho Zambezi, hihe
remained, howovor, undisturbod in
her possessions till a few years ago,
when a question arose between hor
and Great Britain regarding tho
right to Delagoa bay, a port the
value of which, as tho only doep wa-
ter harbor fit for largo vessels along
tho whole stretch of tho southeast
coast south of Beira, was now gener-
ally perceived. President MaoMa-
hon, to whom as arbitrator tho con-
troversy was referred, decided in fa-
vor of Portugal. Subsequently Ger-
many appeared as a formidable
neighbor on tho north, while bound-
ary disputes arose with tho British
settlors who in 1800 had occupied

Thus tho Portuguese frontier,
which had boon vory uncertain, lias

civilized half Ireods, is so small that,
although Homo fitful efforts havo

grants to Africa. Her government,
now hard pressed for money, cannot
find tho sums nooded to dovolop her
African territories, nor is there pri-

Doubtless many a seventeenth cen-

IJero comes old Mephisto himself I
Look at him grinning as ho trots
along, and looming red against the
white of tho snow. It is Roynard,
following in poor, old crazy Mr.
Hare's tracks and traoing every
deviation made by that amiably oc-
centric individual, at n slow but
steady trot. This will bring him
closo to our ambush unloss he first
detoots our presence hero. He cer-
tainly looks very handsomo, though
extremoly wicked withal. That grin

Now, I am going to shoot this fox.

Now, thon, up with our guns and let

WHEN I SPEAK
A/VSA
I never make efforts to indues people to visit j
my store in search of mythical advertised bargains
which do not exist or which are "just out," Such
methods aro dishonest and are certain ultimately
to prove futile. What I advertise, I have, and it is
always exactly aj represented.
There is no oaora certain method of entertaining
the average people than by Bpreading beforo them a
surprise in bargains in an eleyant line of Dreac Goods
in all the NJiW STYJLES, with trimmings to Match,
and a large line of Men's, Youth's and Children^ Cloth >
inff which all know are accustomed to get more than
good values. I never do that, because it is absurd and
, untrue, but I do sell mighty close to cost.
