The historic old building is known simply as the "old rock
s t o r e." Since
w. as partially
tor n down,
the rock walls
have st o od
..unroofed and
crumble i n g, a
s i 1 e n t re-
proach to all
that it should
fall into such
disrepair.,
Now, thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Otis Fowler, who acquired
the property on which the building stands, it is being restored.
Not to its original dimension--Ahat would have meant, rebuild-
_the crumbled walls to second storyheiglht. But a new floor
has been laid, it is being reroofed, and plans are to plaster
the walls. When repairs are completed, the building will once
again be used, this time in connection with the Fowlers' lumber
business.
The rock store was built in 1873 by R. H. Koncheloc,
one of Utopia's first citizens. It has since been used as post-
office, general store, dwelling, and store house. It was once a
favorite place for parties, church bazaars, and lodge meetings.
There are few people who grew up in the community who did
not, as youngsters, gather around the big fireplace, or carve
their initials on the scarred old walls. It is interesting to stand
and contemplate these inscriptions made by those who are
now grown up, some living far away, some passed on.
