In San Antonio, an old captain of mine, Domino Lively, wished me to work
with him under Col. Rip Ford. That gave me a lieutenancy. Then I went to
the conscript camp below Austin, Texas. There drilled the conscripts for the
Confederacy till about 1864. With Lively, I formed a company with these men
and put in with 3rd Texas Infantry (Brownsville). Then sent to Galveston.
After the Dick Dowling fight at Sabine Pass, was sent there. After that
campaigned in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas' till the close of the war.
After the war, was sick, broke down, twenty-one dollars in debt, went
up on the Nueces River at Captain Bill Adams's ranch about Camp Wood to re-
establish my health. Then I was called to San Antonio, Texas by Pat Murphy
