--Spoutings--
By Hal Fees
Brother! The next time I let
anyone talk me out of going to a
football game. I’ll bet I don’t.
What SMU almost did to Notre
Dame! Those who saw it say it
was THE game of the year as far
as they are concerned. S. E. Reed
said of Kyle Rote. “He was Mr.
Football Saturday." Anyway, just
listening to the game kept me
chain smoking, so it’s probably a
good thing I couldn't see it. Bill
Stern called it the game of the
year and wondered why SMU end-
ed up in the bottom half of the
I Southwest Conference. Maybe the
Mustangs haven't played that kind
of football before this year, or,
maybe the Southwest conference
is just a little stronger than most
of the people in the U. S. realize.
Maybe we are a little late, but
wed like to throw a bouquet to
some people who provided a lot
of color for the Football games
here this year, namely, the Pan-
ther Band R. E. McKiski, the di-
rector, has certainly done a fine
job there. I know of no other band
as good in any Class A High School,
and one would have to look far
in AA Class to find a better one.
In addition to their fine marching
and music, we like the twirling of
Peggy Carter, the Majorette, and
the twirlers. Lanita Peters, Thelma
Shaw and Jane Taylor. They are
a credit to any band.
While still on the subject of
football, I'd like to say thanks to
Charles Laney, Wayne McCauley,
and Jimmy Foy, three High School
lads who spotted for us in the
press box this year. Laney was, in
addition, satistician and kept an ac-
curate record of the penalties, first
downs, yardage, and so on.
I was surprised to hear that
Bowie had been toppled by Gar-
land last week, as was I surprised
to hear that highly-touted Lub-
bock had fallen. Maybe a man is
just sticking his neck out to try
to forecast the outcome of games
in quarter and semi-final tilts, but
here goes: Ballinger over Little-
field (with tongue in cheek); Gar-
land over Mineola, (they must have
something to stop Bowie); New
Braunfels to edge Mexia, (the win-
ner of that one should be State
Champ); and El Campo over
Uvalde, (why coaches turn gray).
In AA, well take the Coyotes
over Austin of El Paso, (however,

that El Paso team is very definitely
to be receoned with'; Port Arthur
over Marshall. < this should be a
sound trouncing': Abilene to edge
Highland Park, 'those Eagles have
improved rapidly all season); and
finally. Austin to romp over Alice,
(don’t give TOO many points
there).
A game with a lot of interest
locally next Sunday will be the
game between the Los Angeles
Rams and the Washington Red
Skins for the championship of the
Western Division of the National
Football League. Geo. Sims scored
a touchdown for the Rams last
Sunday, while the Rams missed a
chance to sew up the Western Di-
vision by losing to the Chicago CARD OF THANKS
Cardinals 31-27. ;
Well, except for championship
games, football is over and we'll
be watching five man teams on the
court instead of eleven man teams
on the gridiron. Oren Beall says
not to expect too much this year
as he doesn’t have any returning
lettermen He said in the next
breath, however, that he had sev-
eral who were looking good this
| early in the season. Well see them
here Friday night when they tangle
with Benjamin at the Panther
Gym.
Buy at home this Christmas!
I wish to take this means of
thanking all of the people who
down through the years patronized
the Mead's Produce Business dur-
ing the time my late husband was
operating this business and also
during the time that I have been
running the produce business. I
have leased out the produce busi-
ness to Mr. Vanhooser and your
continued patronage with Mr. Van-
hooser will not only be appreci-
ated by him but b> me also.
Signed: Mrs. Jess Meads.
