Prepores For Private Life
•y MEW PEARSON -
WASHINGTON - President John-
son is getting ready for retirement
to private life with the same zest
that he is pushing his legislative
program He has already organiz-
ed plans for an Institute of Public-
Affairs at Ihe l niversity of Texas
and will draft various "professors”
to cone there to inspire the stu-
dents
“I’m going to get ‘Professor’
Wayne Morse to vome down to
Texas," he told a friend, referring
to the Senator from Oregon who
Once served as dean of the Ini-
♦eraity of Oregon Law School.
“Only Wayne charges too much
He's going to have to reduce his
*e.”
The- ITesident is also thinking of
other molders of national thought
such as "ITofessor" Mike Mans
held of Montana, who used to
teach history at the University of
Montana He may even draft l*ro-
tessor ' William Fulbright. who us-
ed to be president of the L'nfver-
aty of Arkansas. ITofessor John-
son and “Professor" Fulbright dis-
agree on Southeast Asia, but John-
son believes m discussion, not nec-
essarily in consensus, when it
Contes to university life
lie also wants his national af-
fair faculty to spend time on the
campus talking with students, not
Ju-.t lecturing to them He h-els
that one cure for current campus
unrest Is to let students spend two
or three- hours intermittently dur-
ing a week with top leaders of
Congress and government, talking
anout the problems of the day —
ranging from Vietnam to the re-
rponsibilities of the presidency
The- latter is a subject to whi.-h
John .m has giv en a lot of thought
He feels that the job of being Pre-
sident of the l nited States is so
big under our Constitution that its
responsibilities must be diversified.
He has considered all sorts of
remedies, such as the- appointment
ol mx Vue Presidents to handle
dift- rent departments of govern •
m<nt
I.BJ has already raised the mon-
ey to build the Johnson Library
in whieh to house his presidential
papers It will be- located near the
University of Texa« and will be
operated without ex(>ense to the
public- Gul for the benefit of the
public. The building will be finish-
ed in time for him to begin work as
“Professor Johnson shortly after
he leaves the While House on Jan.
