Hornets Wind Up Season With Loss To Floydada
By WENDELL TOOLEY
Well friends, the Hornets
were hardly in the game
with Floydada Friday night,
except for a couple of pass
interceptions by Jim Benard
and another pass intercep-
tion bv Mark Stringer.
When the final buzzer
sounded in the Whirlwind
stadium, it was 30-6 in favor
of Floydada.
The win left the Whirl-
winds 91 for the season,
district champions. . . the
13th winning season out of
the last 14.
The Hornets wound up
the season 4-6 and 1-4 in
district play.
The Hornets had a good
■ rowd of fans on their side
of the field and the weather
was pleasant. . . very little
w ind.
We got the feeling when
the Whirlwinds took the ball
for the first time that we
might see an upset as Jim
Benard intercepted a Todd
Becdy pass anil returned it
all the wav to paydirt for
the first TD of the game. . .
a tine run of some 60 vards.
Run for two extra points
was no giHKl and Julia led
6-0 with 9:()| left in the first
quarter.
However, that was all the
scoring lor the Hornets and
they never got near paydirt
the rest of the game.
The Hornets made only
two first downs the first
halt. . only gains that
amounted to much were two
( hris Sperry passes to An-
thony Davis and Jim Be-
nard. . . a nine yard run by
Roland Powell Sperry was
minus 15 yards.
Carlos Rainwater opened
the scoring for the Whirl-
winds bv grabbing a six-
varil scoring pass from Todd
Beedv Bruce Williams add-
ed a touchdow n b\ snatch-
ing a tumble from the arms
ol Roland Powell and sprint-
ing 20 \ards into the end
/one to give Flovdada a 14-6
lead at the half.
Donell Weeks booted in
another three points with a
2t> card field goal in the
third quarter. Becdy came
up with a touchdown by
punching the ball in from
the one yard-line The final
score in the ilash was made
as Grant lurner grabbed a
nine sard touchdown pass
Ironi Beedv.
Norman Allen led the de-
fensive effort tor Floydada
with 14 tackles while blink-
ing a punt in the third
quarter to give the ball to
the Whirlwinds on the I ulia
10-vard-line. which led to a
