Forty years have passed
since Bob Wills was handed
the crown, but its glitter is as
golden as when Depression
crowds in Texas honkytonks
first placed it on his head.
Bob Wills, the Father of
Western Swing, is still the
king. And his kingdom has
spread from Texas dives and
Oklahoma dance hails to
encompass a nation.
Country performers Merle
Haggard, Waylon Jennings,
and Willie Nelson are just
three among the legion who
still pay him tribute. The
enduring popularity of
Wills's legend and his music
has nearly obliterated the
fact of his death a year ago.
That's a fact easily lost in
the heel-kicking, beer-drink-
ing. fun-time western swing
revival that now is envelop-
ing the nation. Wills is alive
and well and living in Texas,
Oklahoma. Illinois. West Vir-
ginia, Nashville. California,
New York City—wherever
people have caught the fev-
er. Understandably, the
Wills legend is biggest and
growing fastest in the South-
west. where the Father of
Western Swing introduced
his radically different music
style during the Depression.
But the clamor for the music
of the magnetic bandleader-
composer-fiddler from Turk-
ey. Texas, has also hit the
cities. L^rban sophisticates,
for example, went wild when
Asleep at the Wheel intro-
duced Bob's widow Betty
during a recent performance
in Greenw ich Village.
Wills built his kingdom by
successfully blending several
musical styles—country,
jazz, big-band swing, rural
black blues, southwestern
traditional fiddling. Merle
Haggard's Strangers. Asleep
at the Wheel, and Command-
er Cody and His Lost Planet
Airmen are contemporary
groups where the W’dls lega
cy is apparent.
Charles K Townsend also
caught the Wills fever, and
more than a decade ago he
began collecting materials
for SAN ANTONIO ROSE

dynamic life, from his birth
into a family of frontier
fiddlers (1905). through the
development of his career
and the poignancy of his last
recording session (1973), to
his death in 1975. He shows
how Wills brought black and
white musical traditions to-
gether and examines the
tremendous impact he had
on both popular and country
music through the more than
550 selections he recorded
and the forty years he and his
Texas Playboys performed in
dance halls and on the radio.
Even Townsend is amazed
by the way the Wills legend
has grown since Bob's death
’on May 13, 1975. In (he last
several months, two major
record companies and two
smaller ones have released
Bob Wills anthologies.
There’s talk of a movie
chronicling the legendary
fiddler’s life. The Bob Wills
style carried an Asleep at the
Wheel album to the Top Ten
recently. The awe of Willie
Nelson, country songwriter
and performer and ardent
Wills tan was noted in Count-
ry Music magazine. "It’s
amazing," he said, "to have
seen it then and see it now,
to see the same music get-
ting all these people stirred
up and enjoying themselves
the way they were 25-30
years ago."
Not so amazing, perhaps,
for a man who for more than
50 years entertained the
nation with such classics as
his "San Antonio Rose,”
"Faded Love," "Steel Gut
tar Hag." and "lake Me
Back to Tulsa.” Nor is it
surprising for a performer
whose recordings sold better
during his musical heyday
than those of any other
recording artist.
Townsend tells the story of
the man, his music, and his
incredible appeal in SAN
ANTONIO ROSE, a magnifi-
cently written book with
