We love ’em!

In introduc ing us, the young fellow had mem-

mjAJE WERE GUEST ON a talk show back in
If 1966 on WO( -TV, AM & KM in Davenport,
la. Barry (ialdwatet was slat d to represvnt the
GOP and The Country Kditor was to represent
the* I) niocrats. Barry didn't show up, so we had
what was to have been an h ur and 45 minute pro-

in questions on politics The program was to have*
ended at midnight, but there wete s > many calls
stacked up on the incoming lin *- that the station
kept the program going 30 minutes past stgn-olf
time.
When negotiation- were made* by telephone for
our ajipearance, the pr tducvr of the show referred
to th • other member of the panel as “the man
from Arizona.” He* a-sumed we knew whom he*
nr ant, but we* never caught on. When we found out
that it wa. Goldwater and that h* canceled out at
the last minute, we were petrified—due jirimarily
to the* extensive publicity the show had received,
and we, an unkn ivcn, would face an audic*nee
whic*h had tuned tn just to hear Barry.
When wc learned lot *r that the show attracted
more call- than any o h r in the* series and was the
only one continued past the ending time, we felt
very flattered.
We were* invited on the program due to our
book which had ju-t been released by World l’ub-

lature in January 1973.
WIRST MEETING WAS scheduled for Kc*b. IK,
■ but S*nalir Sh ■111.cn was grounded in Ama-
rillo and we were grounded in Lubbock by the fog.
If any of our community troublemakers plan
to make darn foils of th ms lies ncx' week, w«*'d
appreciate th or doing it as -onn as possible so as
to conform to our early deadline.
•HURSDAY WAS A busy day around The* Her-
I aid We -t irted tabulating the telephone calls,
but soon lo t count when both lines became tied
up at the sam * time.
While wc were at lunch, a stack of notes
had accumulated on our typewriter.
Call.- came from our old -tandbys as well
as from people wc* don't even know. And the
calls continued when w* went home.
But don't you ever get th * idea we don't
like them.
Wc wouldn't he* human if we didn't like* com-
pliments. but more than that, we appreciate having
th:* reaction of people to -ubjects, controversial
among some types of people.
lAISEK BEFORE LAST calls were almost as
ff numerous. In fact we got several at home
after we were in bed and asleep. . .but we
didn't mind a bit!
Almost every caller urged us to “kt*ep up
th- good work.” not t > stop until thing- are .straight-
ened out around Tulia.
Many turned over to us valuable bits of infor-
mation which had com* their way from hospital
and clinic per-onnel and their wn - We're keeping
it all on file in ca-c* w * m* *d to prove certain
allegations.
■MOLLY HOWARD HAS a practice* of inviting
Iw a minister and hi- family tn lunch the fol-
lowing Sunday whenever -hi* ueeuntbs to the temp-

or othe- It's .scut of .1 p nanc ’
Whi n vc* went m. Ihur-day sh * greeted us
with, “hoiing man, you’d b tt.i bring the entire
ministgnal alliance to dinnot Sunday
^F ALL THE CALLS WHICH we and Z a, our
rrceptr-nist, took, there were only two sour
on.*s.
Our sour call was from an old girl who imply
a-ked the question, "flow can a pro-titutc be
raped?”
She* had broken th • c onn *c*tion before we could
reply, "We give up, tell us.” Wc* thought it must
b ■ some kind of a gag.
Zoa’s sour call simply asked us to leave no
more of our "garbage" at a street addi s- which
she gave. We re-read last week’.- pajrer and assum-
ed -he was accepting the invitation quoted from
Kin.'st Joiner. Seems hers was one of the bells
we rang.
The address was somewhere on Travis Road.
The last subscriber we had to cancel h *r sub-
scription nearly worrii*d a relative to death, bor-
rowing her jiaper. It’s always embarrassing to
b .th of u- when we bump into a person who
has canceled his subscription at a news stand
buying a paper!
MJOST DISAPPOINTING reaction to la-t week's
Ixrl p;i|K.*r was the* failure of some* to catch
th;* pm nt in our us* of the names of Nell Mays
and Alva Kinck.
Of course the shoe probably fit, but the |>>int
was, w* were discussing hospitals and clinics
la-t week — not development centers.
Had the merchant qu ited been alluding to N *11,
he probully would have used some ftgur • like
“two elephants wrestling under a eircu- tent" >r
“that Bajitist ex-choir member who sings neither
sharp nor flat but in the cracks.”
We're afraid to speculate how he might have
described Alva because Alva is bigg.*r than eith*r
our elf or the m *rehant. Come to think of it,
so is Nell!
IP YOU STILL CANT figure who the merchant
I meant, think real hard about who has been
slandering whom dunng th<* pa-t year and linger.
Who has been stabbing whom in the* back? VS ho
predicted a local investigation at least a month
before it happen-d? W ho has bc*vn running around
accusing people of being dope addicts? Who ha-
been -landering the character of a certain promi-
nent Tulian who has more friends than anyone
wc* kn ;w? Who ha- b *n carrying tales to Ama-
rillo doctor-? What woman told a lie* on a local
man at a ballgame during the* past months? Who
slandeted a character in the nur-c- lounge’’ Who
has b en harassing whom over the months?
Who called little meetings to conspire again t
a fellow member of the local 111 rdical society?
’Twasn’t Noll.
'Twasn't Alva.
•HERE IS SOMETHING that (I ft. - all logic with
I most all thoughtful and rational Tulian-:
If a busim.-- partnership of any kind siur-
for any reason whatsoever, there* 1- always the
opportunity to -plit up, each going his own way.
The reason for the spDt up, wv suggest,
is beside the point
Once we had a businc-s partnership that dis-
mi grated becaite of alcohol
Let us assume the worst, for !h<* sake of
making a jxunl inly, that one partn r is immoral,
peihap- h;* become- a dojK.* addict, perhaps he*
commits murder, perhaps he becomes totally ob-
noxious, perha|>- he c*ven is caught fondling a
c hild, 1- picked up drunk in an Amarillo bar by a
preacher. . .you nam • his sin.
WJLfHAT COURSE SHOULD the* “good guy” of
WW. the partnership follow when the situation
bee* ones unbearable fir him?
If the two are Christians, and even this may
not necessarily have to be* the ca-e, the “good
guy” would attempt to convince the bud guy"
of his fault and attempt a reconciliation. The*
“strong” should give* th.* weak a lift, lie* -hould
explain to the "bad guy" that things have become
unbearable and attempt to persuade him to mend
his ways.
If hi- efforts are successful, the pr ibk-m is
.-(itvc*d.
But if the "bad guy” refuse- to reform, th**
“good guy" ha- the option of withdrawing from
the jiartn ership and establishing hi- own bu-ine.-s,
perhaps with government -ubsidy.
There n<*ed be no unplea-anlness, n > n *cd to
polarize a community, split a church They -imply
get a busine.-s "divorce" and each goes his own
way.
WHE POINT WE'RE making is. . .after this
I dissolution >f partm*rship ha- bc*i*n effected.
why it It MCMsary Nr either the "*oed |»y"
•r the “bad guy’ te destroy the other? Why
is it necessary for the “Christian” to conduct
a campaign of harassment against the “bad guy' ?
Why is it necessary for the “Christian," the “sanc-
tified one*", to fan the fires of discord by conspir-
ing with mutual enemies of the bad guy" to
ruin him’’
Why should the* “good guy" even resort to har-
a-sing a third bu-ines- who had formerly bc*en .1
-upjilier for the old partnership'’ Why should he
lie t» his cu-tnmers by telling them that one* >1
the former suppliers of the old partnership is * no
long, r in business"?
Saw a Mr. Grossman in town the other day. lie
had a problem with his foot.
He also needed to have an old prescription re-
filled. « »
•HERE'S NO LAW that -ays people hav* to
I maintain a partnershqi ag.nn-t their own wills.
Keen when the “unChn.-ii.ins'’ get a divorce
they have enough common sense and decency to
go their separate ways and live and let live.
W'e repeat, if your bu-ines- partner t.s a devil
and you have withdrawn and e-tahlished your own
business, why 1- it n ccs-aty to conspire with
your friends, your sympathizers, your relatives,
to rum this “devil" whom y iu insist 1- suc h a
scoundrel?
What spirit promjM- such behavior'.’
We can only draw our own conclusions as
to why people w .uId bc*hav** -o illogu ally. . and
w itch 1- the* REAL go.nl guy. the Christian?
Now if we didn't ring your bell, don't come to

An Editorial
Not because of any animosity towards our friend
Preston Smith whose effectiveness we believe to be
nearing its end as governor of Texas . . .
Not because we do not have a tremendous amount
of admiration for Sis Parent hold and her dedication to
reform and good government . . .
Not because we do not think Dolph Briscoe is a
decent man but otic* lacking in both ability and inclina-
tion to govern Texas as it needs to be governed . . .
Because we believe Ben Barnes has the youth, the
ambition, the drive and the ability to lead Texas most
effectively at this hour in history. The Tulia Herald en-
dorses him for Governor of Texas in 1972.
