Lights Out!
Evidently a raccoon shorted out the
transformer about a half mile west of
town Saturday night about 10 o'clock
and cloaked the city ofTulia in darkness.
The City’s power plant was quickly
activated and three engines were used for
about a two hour period until electricity

Hornets District Track Champions
BY W ENDELL TOOLEY
I he Hornets were behind Eriona 62-47
Friday night at the end of the field events.
But they made it up and more. Satur-
day as they came out district champions
with 136 points.
Eriona was second with 115 points and
Eloydada was third with 105 points
THE SPORTS BANQUET was most
enjoyable. a lot of humor. . . a lot of
winners honored.
Athletic Director L. G. Wilson was at
his best with many humorous comments
here and there. Some of the athletes
decided to sing a song “Thanks To The
Coaching Staff. They almost lost it a
time or two. The emcee remarked the
young singers only had a week of prac-
tice. L.G. remarked,“probably more like
one weak practice."
One of the fantastic revelations of the
banquet was the report that Coach Bill
Schneider won his 500th varsity basket-
ball game the night the Hornettes beat
Olton here.
Certainly, the coach was most modest
about the achievement. If I had known
about it, I would have made an announce-
ment, blown the bugles or something in
honor of the 500th victory at the end of
the game
I was able to get a picture of Coach
Schneider and his wife Beverly. She's lost
count, but she has attended most of the
games he’s coached. . . win or lose.
A great big “Congratulations" to
coach Schneider and all the athletes
honored at the banquet.
LAST WEEK I WROTE an editorial
that the proposed fourlane highway link-
ing Dallas and Clovis should be built
from Estelline through Tulia to Clovis.
Now, with just a few miles of paving.
Oklahoma City and 1-40 could be linked
into Estelline and Tulia. There’s a four-
lane toll road from Oklahoma City to
Lawton I hen a good highway on down
to Hollis. Build a paved road from out
west of Hollis on into Estelline and con-
nect Clovis with Oklahoma City as well
as Dallas!
I HAVE ALWAYS I^RI ED to encour-
age the people around me I have said,
"try. try again, think positive, you can do
it. don’t give up."
and I have tried to practice what I
preach
For 24 years. 16 at Eloydada and
The Eloydada girls won the champion-
ship and the Hornettes came in fifth The
Whirtlettes amassed 167 points. Mule-
shoe was second with 128. Dimmitt was
third with 82. Eriona was fourth with 71,
Tulia had 59'/j points. Hornette Tara Irl-
beck made 22 of the points.
The JV Hornets won the district
eight here at Tulia I have entered the
special edition contest at the Panhandle
Press Association in Amarillo. I had
never won it until this past Saturday. I
DIDNT GIVE UP!
Many times I have come out second or
third to the Shamrock newspaper, which
almost always won first place with its St.
Patrick's Day edition
Finally, first place!. . . The Herald’s
picnic edition, all 40 pages ol it received
the first place award
My appreciation to my staff, our busi-
ness firms, every one who helped us on the
Picnic Special Edition.
