Joyce Rogers is inthe Trenches for
the Swisher County Sheriffs Depart-
ment
Joyce is from LaJunta,Colo., where
she and her husband worked mostly in
feed lots.
After ten years with a feed lot in
Colorado, she and her husband were
transferred to Nebraska.
Joyce said, "We weren’t real crazy
about the weather in Nebraska so after
two years we were fortunate enough
to transfer to Texas."We moved to
Tulia in July, 1983. I've done just
about everything in the feed lots. I
started out as a truck driver. I became
head cattle treater for four and one-
half years and then moved from assis-
tant mill manager to mill manager,"
said Joyce.
"When the feed lot we were work-
ing for was sold my husband was laid
off. He decided to open his own busi-
ness doing lawn mower repairs and
yard work," Joyce said."
We also opened a video store. We
were the first people in Tulia to open
a video store. It was 1984."
That was when Joyce quit the feed
lot to help with the store. They oper-
ated that store for about five and one-
half years. Then her husband became
ill and they had to close the business.
In 1990 a jailers' course was being
offered."I took the coarse with the
idea of going to work for the prison,"
said Joyce. The prison didn't open,
but a job became available at the jail.
"I was hired to work at the jail in
November of 1991, and I’ve been there
aver since," she said.
In 1993 Joyce earned her certifica-
tion as a peace officer.
"It comes in handy, k allows me to
work the streets when they need extra
help. I also serve papers and transport
female inmates.*
Joyce said one of the most exciting
things that ever happened to her was
when she came upon a prisoner lying
face down on the cell floor not breath-
ing. Although he was a young man,
they thought he was having a heart
attack.
He wasn't breathing. Joyce did

saved his life. The inmate claims, and
probably rightly so, that Joyce saved
his life.
Joyce said she doesn't get very up-
set over anything. She also said that
very little shocks her. She said she
doesn't have a very bad time with the
inmates because if they're acting un-
reasonably, she leaves them alone. I
When they become reasonable again
she deals with them.
Don, Joyce’s husband, is very sup-
portive and encourages her. They have
a son Shane, 23, who lives in
Bcrthound, Colo., and a daughter,
Kati,16. who is a junior in Tulia High. LEFT MIKE HANNAH showed Native American artifacts at Swisher
